When do you apply for the tags? does a first timer have a chance at drawing one?

Not yet,and it depends on what unit you apply for.

Check the Colorado DOW web site- it shows the number of pref points needed to draw, by unit, species, and sex.

Application deadline is generally around April 1st. Here are a couple of helpful links. The hunt odds will give you odds of drawing a tag. FYI: As a nonresident, you would not have a chance to draw a bull muzzleloading statewide tag on your first application. In fact, figure waiting about 3 years at this point to draw a bull tag.

However, you would draw a cow tag as a first choice, and would have a decent chance to draw it as a second chance and still get a preference point.

dont understand the pref points, if I choose cow for second choice I get a point?

Bad, you put in for a preference point as your first choice and get that for sure for a bull next go round. You get 4 choices I think, so then looking at what it takes point wise to get a cow MZ tag its between 0/1 point. We did same last year as we are building bull points. We all drew cow tags as second choice while still getting another preference point. THen for 3rd choice (I'm speculating here) if you coudl find a late season cow rifle hunt you could apply for that also, possibly getting 2 cow tags in the same year, and a preference point to boot.

GO to the website and search around. Find the applications and it tends to make more sense, download the Adobe file for regs and do some reading.

If you are chosen for your second choice, the buck stops there. You can't draw a third choice if you already get drawn for a second (or first) choice.

To get another tag, you would have to put into a suplemental drawing.

Good info as I've never looked past 2nd choice.....
