Good evening, has anyone on here ever messed with opening up the Mashburn Super mag to 8mm? It should be a pretty wicked number as it would have the same case capacity as the 300 Win Mag but the bullets wouldn't be limiting the powder capacity as much. Just a thought. Figured I would cast out a line, any nibbles out there?

I think it would be the same as Kvale's poor man's magnum which was the 300 win mag necked up to 8mm. here's the link to the old Guns magazine where Kvale talks about it and gives load data: http://www.gunsmagazine.com/1957issues/G0157.pdf

It is stating the obvious to refer to wildcatting as a waste of money, but with the 8mm Rem Mag already out there, it is doubly true in this case. Furthermore, why play around with .323" when there are so many more good .338" bullets?

Col. Charles Askins was big on the 8mm diameter bullets. Two of his wildcats were the 8mm/378 and 8mm/404.

IMHO the beauty of the 7 MSM is 300 Weatherby-like trajectory, and stout bullets, with much less recoil.
I think an 8 MSM would defeat the recoil benefit.

Thanks for the comments...Personally, I like the 8mm bore and have several different wildcats on it already. Recoil isn't much of a factor as that can be mitigated by proper stock design and fit. Was looking at the 8mm/300 Win mag but with the MSM case having a fatter shoulder I don't have to worry much about my bullets taking up powder space. Just some thoughts for a winter build and a upcoming Alaska hunt.

Interesting, my son and I are thinking of blowing out a .325 chamber in a PAC-NOR barrel, to take one of Noslers new cases, most likly the .30 Nos, or the new .338, and neck to 8mm. Same deal, we like the 8 bore, and we built originally on a 700 LA.

Not a wildcat but it is hard to beat the good old 8mm Rem mag. Works fine in a 700 action and easily launches 200 gr bullets at 3000+ fps.

Heck if you like it, I'd go for it. Love the Mashburn and can't see anything wrong with the great hunting bullets available for it. Good luck, hope you do it.

I would go for it too if that's what you want. I considered a 8mm-338 WM before the 325 WSM came out, If I ever found a good take off 8mm barrel for my Rem 700 it could still happen........

Hey Gerry, there is the 8x62 Durham mag which is uses the 338 case but has the shoulder moved forward. I have a reamer ordered for it as well. I just have to many actions and barrels laying around collecting dust n rust so have to do something for play...now that hunting seasons are done. Then again, perhaps I could go steelhead fishing...just a thought! Have yourself and your family a very Merry Christmas!
