Have a sako 7 REm mag on GB, if it doesn't sell in a couple months I may consider having it rebarreled to different caliber. Just looking for a few suggestions on what I could go to in that length cartridge without having to fool with the bolt since I have no idea, except maybe a 300 win mag, if that would even work. Would a weatherby caliber fit?? I've got the caliber spectrum covered now, just might need to do something with this one.

What's wrong with it being a 7 mag ? Yeah, what problem are we trying to solve? Too close in performance to something you already have (or maybe you already have a 7mm mag)? Just want something new? Need something more suitable for bigger or smaller game? I'd probably look at a 338 win mag, but that's just me.

The spectrum of cartridges is pretty broad if wanting to re-barrel and "not having to fool with the bolt", like he states in the op. He can look up magnum based cartridges that use the .532" rim diameter and go from there. However, if going bigger, I totally agree with you and would bypass the 300wm and go to the 338WM. Just a personal preference I have though... Hell, if he reloads, I'd go with something different like the 308 Norma magnum or the 300H&H over the mighty 300wm.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Thanks for responses. Been outside plowing out. I had a 7 mag years ago and wasn't too impressed with it. There's nothing "wrong with it" and I have other similar in performance. A 338 crossed my mind, have one but so what, but wasn't sure the length was right and bolt face. I guess the .532 rim diameter is what I needed to know, should've checked a reloading book. For some reason a 240 or 270 weatherby is appealing (have a 257).

I have a local gunsmith that did work for me before, he builds sniper rifles for state police, and custom stuff, so I'll get his imput if I make a decision. However if it sells on GB then the point is moot, just some gun conversation on a winter day.

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

If wanting to stay old school, I'd go 7 Mashburn. If modern is your thing, a 7/375 Ruger or 28 Nosler wouldn't be bad at all. If you're wanting to load and shoot long, heavy bullets in the factory mag, the 7WSM is a choice.

6.5 Rem Mag. You can load the bullets way out in the long action. I have a friend with one and he loves it.

Yeah, had a 270 pump years ago, never shot anything with it but kinda like the 7 mag for me, just can't warm up to it. Now anything with weatherby after it sounds.... well , potent.... even a 270.

I'd bet you don't have that covered. grin Jerry

264 Win Mag would work well... +1 This one would give you the advantages of 6.5 BC PLUS the velocity (speed for some) to avoid knobs/turrets for a LONG way out there. Jerry ps: I repeat - slow bullets don't impress me.
