I have several buddies in different states who are Troopers. They call that passive speed enforcement. They get in the left or far left lane during rush hour times and do the speed limit. They do it to slow traffic as to prevent crashes. According to them the practice cuts their crash numbers nearly in half. Their is always one or two that don't get it though. Can't save them all I guess.

He and 16 others in a string were cruising about 90 when a state patrolman came cruising by on the left, pointing at each car as he passed to pull over. All 17 of them did.

And then the guy that rounded the turn behind, thought it was some sort of check point and pulled in, got a ticket too.

I think Colorado has gone to rolling road blocks to slow traffic coming out of the mountain resorts on busy weekends. The reduced accident rate supposedly speeds things up.

So, if everyone drives the speed limit, it cuts down on crashes. There appears to be a lesson in there somewhere.

The only one not laughing and making jokes was the cop. Somehow he managed to keep a straight face while he wrote all 17 citations.

Thanks for posting that - really made my day. A number of years ago, when Iowa still had a plane up in the air, I was heading down 14 to Knoxville with vehicle after vehicle demonstrating that someone should really put them into one of them there sprint cars by flying past me. Came up over a rise and around a curve and there were a good number of troopers there waving everyone over to the side of the road. I pulled over with the line and a trooper looked at his clipboard, smiled, and waved me on my way. I still smile when I remember that day.

What cuts down on crashes is staying in the right lane if you aren't passing anyone.

Here's what's exciting:

"Doing 140 MPH following a trooper WITH YOUR LIGHTS OUT and getting 40 yards behind him and hitting him with the brights"!!
