Seven or eight years ago I bought a brand new 1886 45-70. It has the rebounding hammer and tang safety.

I came with the crescent butt stock and it is very uncomfortable for me to shoot it.

Is there an aftermarket source for a shotgun style stock?

So far I have been unable to locate such a stock.

Look here. Call em and see if this will fit the Browning or New tang safety Winchester. Bet it will!

Thouqh your question may have been answered, I must make a comment about the crescent steel buttplate on the Miroku/Winchester 1886.
My Miroku 1886 is a .45-90 and has the steel butt plate. At first, I was testing ammo from the bench rest, shouldering the butt like a shotgun stock and found the crescent to be painful with heavy loads. Then, I learned how to place the lower tip of the butt into my armpit and all was fine. Even with 450 grain bullets at 2150fps, the body just flexes, the barrel rises and comes back down and I am ready for the follow up shot (if needed).
The rifle has never bruised anyone that has shot it with the butt plate properly mounted ad discussed above.

Yessir, rest that crescent around that big balled shoulder muscle, BTW, I have a very nice buttstock and a couple really pretty forends for a '86 Browning, anyone have interest PM me and I'll find em and get em dusted off for some pics.

They are all factory Browning wood and finished by Browning too.

Mine is also a 45-90 however shooting off sticks instead of the bench will tame the recoil no matter the bullet weight you launch downrange.

Both Jerry, first decent weather window in awhile to get some long overdo casting done before the Arctic air arrives again! 550 gr greaser for the Sharps and some PH #457121 that weigh 485 at 30:1 for the '86.

I reckon I am doing it wrong, but I have tried shouldering it a few different ways.

I guess I just chalked it up to having very large shoulders. I just cant seem to find a spot where one of the points of the crescent does not rest on the meat.

SWEET, that'll work Woody, I need to cast some 530 gr paper patch bullets for my 45 cal Sharps rifles and some 705 grainers for my 50.

You can find a comfortable spot JC, I wear a 52" sport coat and found a good spot quick, my Browning was a 45-70 that got Turnbull'd to a 50-110 WCF and still wears the crescent steel butt.

I'll go find that butt-stock and see what it is.

My butt stock is a carbine style butt, it still has the steel butt and is curved, but not as pronounced as the crescent and much wider as well, the butt stock and forends are all checkered and come from high-grade Miroku Brownings.

My FFA jacket in high school was a 54, I reckon it would take a 62 now.

I will monkey around with it again tomorrow.

Yup, that's it, damn 62" coat, you may have to fashion a butt stock out of a wheel barrow.

I as well as many others here can help with cast bullets and black powder for the 45-70 as well.

They sure sell a lot of nice smokeless loads for the 45-70.

Just doesn't seem right for some reason. Plus, I have never been around black powder, except for that old blasting powder Grandpa had stashed away. Figured I should try. Thanks for the offer.

Yes, if your rifle is a straight grip it should all slide right on.

Black is right on big bore lever rifles as far as I'm concerned too, I shoot it in my 50-110 and an original 1886 in 45-70.
