As close to midnight I start the new year with pickled herring (my preference is in sour cream). It'll be store-bought as long time family friend George S. who used to make it passed a few years ago. this is a "good luck" food.
On New Years Day we always have pork or ham - NEVER chicken!! Why, you ask? Chickens scratch backwards and pigs root forward! 'Tis another "good luck" food!
Dint want y'all starting out the new year the wrong way!
A fortuitous year to all!

I can hardly wait, sorta like Christmas morning when I was a kid. College football, all day long appetizers, lots of beer and maybe even shot or two of JD. Tuesday morning might be a tad rough.

Black-eyed peas... Yep, with ham hocks for flavor and cubes of fat-back for meat cooked in, along with collard greens cooked with hocks as well. Cornbread too.

I'm gonna shoot a black bear, deer, and sheep this year. Maybe even catch a few fish in Mexico.

he is good, remodeling his bathroom downstairs, so he has been a little busy. He is taking us on the sheep hunt this fall in the Brooks Range. Happy New Year to you too! Why aren't you out partying it up? I made a killer punch for tonight, just hope some friends show to help me drink it! vodka, rum, tequilla, triple seq, and lemonade..... I'm thinking it will be one of the new paradise drinks served when you visit! No whiskey, but tastes damn good!

Three years ago...I decided to start some traditions of our own. We always have Turkey for Thanksgiving and Ham for Christmas Day....So I wanted something different...
Smoking a Prime Rib on New Years is the way to go. Of course, we add some old traditions as well, like Black Eyed Peas.
As a child growing up, we would arise in the morning to homemade biscuits, gravy, venison and eggs. Then we would head out on a quail hunt....to return home in time for the 1pm dinner and a lazy day of football.
Life is Good....
One trip a week to the range and a family that loves to shoot and hunt.
John

I may be in trouble if that happens considering the only ones laying around now are the 'good' ones may have to shoot a few off the deck though to compete with our white trailer trash neighbors and there fireworks

Take some of the witches brew and make a Molotov cocktail, wait till 3am and hit the trailer. Should look like roaches running after the light is turned on.
Don't forget to run some video........grin

Hopping John. Red cow peas, salt pork, rice, butter, salt & Pepper.
It's 11:20, and its ready to eat. Been cooking it for hours now.
Got collards and cornbread as well.
Just opened a new bottle of Old Fitzgerald 1894 Bourbon. Yum!
Sam......
