"Rising Tide" by John Barry
I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is the history of the flood of 1927 on the lower Mississippi river. His subtitle is 'the mississippi flood and how it changed America'
He brings in the history of New Orleans, the army corps of Engineers, the study of hydraulics, plantation economies, Delta demographics, and much else. Not a light read, but a great one.

Syc---I agree, a great read.....of couse I read it long before the events of 2005 made it even more interesting. Barry teaches at Tulane and I have met him a couple of times. He spoke to our SCV group at lunch when the book came out several years ago. Nice guy, but being a Yankee he declined to join in the salute to the Confederate flag....can't blame him for that.

I also enjoyed "The Great Influenza" by the same author. It makes you realize why Grandma was so worried about "the 'flu". He makes a pretty good case for it being spread by trains and troopships, imagine how fast it could go now with jetplanes and airports!
