Waiting on some epoxy to harden on a fly rod and going through Cookie's files for entertainment at the moment. Thought this was a little unusual for a mule deer. A for sure mulie but with some nice symmetric whitetail like tines. Heard mention around camp on the whitetail looking buck, but did not know she had nailed an image. Post season, so he should be a pretty nice one next fall.

I'd like to see what he looks like next year. Built like a rain barrel. Nice buck.

Unfortunately there are plenty of West Texas muleys with whitetail racks or with half whitetail racks. First day this year i passed on a huge heavy horned 28 in wide 8 point. Thankfully the ranchers grandson took it out of the herd 2 days later.

I wonder if they are hybrids. A white tail buck won't past up the chance to service a Muley doe. Just saying. Cheers NC

I wonder if they are hybrids Not likely here, as the nearest whitetails are about 80 miles away. From the rear end it was a muley all the way.

Cheers NC I have seen and killed hybrids in areas west of San Angelo, specifically around Crane and Rankin years ago where both muleys and whitetails live. I dont see any whitetails in the west Texas prairie or desert country. Lots of muleys without forks on one or both sides, and some with big racks. Surprisingly, there are a smattering of whitetail in the Sacramento Mts of SE NM south and east of Cloudcroft around Mayhill. Elevation at Cloudcroft is 8600 ft.

Antler configuration supposedly isn't a very reliable indicator of a mule/whitetail hybrid.
I have read that the position of a gland on the rear legs is a much more reliable indicator of a hybrid.
Neat deer the OP posted, regardless.
