I have several rifles in these calibers,223,243,7-08,270, and one 7mm Rem Mag. I'm thinking of rebarreling one of my 270's into something different. I thought about 280 but feel it's too close to the 270 and I have the 7 Mag. Right now the 338-06 or a 35 Whelen are what I am considering.

What do you guys think? Would either be an easier conversion to make using a 270 Sako 75? Is one a better choice ,or is it just personal preference? I would think Elk would be the main target.

35 Whelen is a mean cartridge, but not as cool as a 338/06.

My 270 is at Pac-Nor right now getting a sex change to a 30-06.The 30-06 is hard to beat. Many choices of bullets, bullet weights and powders that will make it work.

Install a new 270 barrel.

If elk are your target, do you have a lightweight 270?

I have a 338WM, but if I didn't, and I wanted to re-barrel a 270, it would become a 338-06 in short order.

Buy bullets and shoot out the 270 barrel first, just as it is.

You'd be way, way ahead.

Unless you hunt really big stuff, the mediums are mostly just gonna hit you harder.

I'm thinking .30/06, the lack of which must vex you sorely.

Over .30, I'd go with the .338/06 because of all the nifty bullets you'd have to choose from, with a little more velocity to help those mono-metals expand.

What fresh Hell is this?
