Does anyone know of a special run of 700's in the 90's ( i think 90's)
that were blu/ same syn stock used on the ss bdl of that era. The 24" sporter bbl is fluted, but only about 10 inches which starts about 1 1/2" in from the muzzle.
It has a matte finish, but definitely not a SPS finish. It's as smooth as a standard blued gun. I was told Rem made 88 in 270 and 100 in'06. This ones a 270.Supossedly this info came fro Rem,but that's all they knew. The bbl stamps from left to right are a symbol that looks like an old wooden barrel, them PO , then A6. It's a PA gun, so theres a chance it's a grices gun.

I assume it's the PO i mentioned, That decodes to June of 94' if i'm reading it right. That fits by the stock. Trigger is old style. It's still an odd duck. Did Rem offer a gun with fluting that early?

One of my college roomates bought such a gun in 95 or 96 in 30-06 at a gunshop in Salem, VA. I do not remember a lot about it other than what you have mentioned. He purchased some Nosler 150 BT and I still have some of the bullets that were not loaded. Fluting was new and this was the first fluted rifle I personally handled. The flutes were cut in the area forward of the stock if my memory is working correctly.

I'm going to call them tomorrow, but the above number made info was supposed to come from them, but all they could say was it was a special run. To bad they don't use this finish on their matte rifles nowadays.

Sounds right. Did he buy it new or used?

He bought it new for a little over $400. It was one of the few rifles he could afford.

Remington confirmed it's a 94' 700 bdl blu/syn 24"fluted bbl. No other info, unless i want to send pics to their historian. BBfan, Thanks for the info, if it was available new in VA that definitely pokes holes in my Grice's special run theory.

Update:

I followed up with a few pics and a serial # to Rems historian. He confirmed what I had learned from the ladies working the phone, and added that it was a special run in 94' for Hicks. Order #26188. They couldn't give me an exact number made though.

Hanco, it isn't a classic. It wears the same checkered syn stock as a early 90's SS BDL, bUt this gun is matte blue 24" fluted bbl, no sights of course. Definitely a different finish then a sps gun. Smooth finish on the gun, but the floor plate has a rough finish that's also different than a SPS.

I doubt if the order number has anything to do with production numbers, but it ends with 188 and i was told 100 made in'06, and 88 made in 270 from previous owner. Rem's historian would know if that was the case I'm sure. Anyway maybe this info will help someone with questions someday.
