why do some lightwait rifles kick harder than others?
i have shot a featherwait m 70 winchester in 308. caliber and one in a ruger 77 and one in the kimber, the kimber didnt have any kick and the other 2 slamed me compared to the kimber, and i shot the same bullet in all 3 guns.
i am getting a remington mountain lss in 7mm-08 and heard some guys say that it kicks harder than there 30-06.

Stock geometery & total rifle weight. Both will cause a percieved difference in recoil.

The Kimber's negative comb and thick 1" Decelerator account for the difference. The Ruger and M70 use tire tread recoil pads and typically shaped handles.

I've got a remington mountain lss in 7mm-08 and it doesn't kick anywhere near as hard as any 30-06 I have ever shot. It even kicks much less than the 30-06 BAR I used to have which had reduced recoil due to the gas operating system.

The Mtn LSS 7mm-08 is a shear pleasure to shoot and on several occasions I have shot a 100 rounds or more in a single range session. Recoil simply is not an issue.

Get your Rem Mtn LSS 7mm-08....you'll be glad you did!

That makes it worse. Not only do lighter rifles kick harder, they also kick faster, making that difference even more.
The Remington Mtn. Rifle I had back in the early 80's in .280 was another hard kicker. Thanks to a thin, hard recoil pad and a stock that wasn't as wide as most.
If you get one, I'd keep that in mind. There are lots of very good recoil pads out there these day. You might need to change the pad on whatever you buy.
I've shot lots of '06's. The 7-08, and the 7X57 are noticably easier on the shoulder simply because they shoot lighter bullets and burn less powder. A 7-08 is an excellent choice.
Big Stick seems to think that the average 7-08 sporter will shoot better than the average .308. That's because they don't have as loose a throat in the barrel to accomondate Mil.Surp ammo. He may have something there. E

Now that I have my NULA rifle on order, I feel free to convince you other shooters that it is the best rifle on the market. Mule Deer has commented that the NULA design and implementation gives lighter felt recoil, something Melvin Forbes also notes.

I have an ULA muzzleloader in .50, and that rifle seems to me to have low recoil even with big loads of powder and heavy bullets. I have shot rifles up to the .577 NE, and I think I have a good basis for comparision.

Stock design as mentioned, the stock that fits you so the contact point with your shoulder is nearest in line with the centerline of the bore. Also the way you grip it that may differ between brands. Obviously recoil pads, pad width also mentioned.

Again, rifle weight, with emphasis on balance point (with scope). The further the center of gravity of the rifle is toward the muzzle, the less rotational recoil (muzzle jump) will be present.

I bought my wife a remington mountain DM 700 Light weight in a 260 rem. That rifle has some kick to it but it is still less than my 30-06 and my buddie's 7-08 ruger light weight (16 in bbl) and accurate to boot. If recoil really is an issue I would consider just getting a slightly heavier rifle. Magna porting and muzzle breaks will (in my opinion) ruin your gun and make it so DANG LOUD that you wont like your gun any more.

how the stock fits you has alot to do with it. my wife has a Remmy 7 youth in 7-08, because the stock doesnt fit me, to me the lil rifle kicks, not bad but definatly gets my attention after a few rounds. throw the same rifle into the hands of my recoil shy wife and because the stock fits her she loves the rifle and tells me it doesnt kick at all.
