You might be the only one Joel, but thanks man!

Scotty, I fully intend to get mine dialed back in, I have time now.

Each inch is worth about 25 fps/inch.
I had a 25" 270 once but quickly decided I didn't like it as well as a shorter barrel. Today the longest I would go is 22". May go 20" next. I will still easy break 3000fps.

With the Smashburn you can get to 3125-3150 with the 160 in a 22". That is plenty.

You're right; cases of the STW capacity (which really boiled down to full length, blown out 300 H&H brass necked to 7mm,and were in existence a long time before the STW) did not work too well from 22 inch barrels but cases of somewhat less capacity like the 7mm Weatherby and Mashburn did.

Warren Page killed 400+species of BG animals globally with Old Betsy, his 22" barreled 7mm Mashburn with a 175 gr Nosler Partition and 175 Hornady. So the rifles shot well.

Keep in mind back then there was no 7 Rem Mag.

A bit later, Bob Hagel built a Mashburn but used a 24" barrel

You can look this stuff up. Anyway that's where the idea came from.

Here's one of those rifles at work; it was built by Griffin ad Howe, chambered 7 Rem mag with 23" barrel.

FYI... I saw an announcement on Accurate Reloading that BobinNH passed away last week. A valuable resource and gentleman has been lost.

Rick, I actually agree with you to be honest, but anything under a 22" barrel feels sorta weird to me honestly. Not saying bad/or good, but to me it just feels short. I have a 45-70 Guide Gun and a BLR 358 with a 20", those feel okay but a bolt gun would just feel weird.

But yup, a 22" 270 or 280 is just about magical.
