Thunderbolt, From the Battle of the Bulge to Vietnam and Beyond: Gen Creighton Abrams and the Army of His Times

I really enjoyed this biography of a thoughtful, competent, forward looking officer. The author was Lewis Sorley. Some great anecdotes in the book. A couple that I remember: As a young armor officer, before WWII, there were no tanks to train in. Abrams had his men out in the field, performing maneuvers, WITHOUT TANKS. Running up and down hills, attacking, defending, communicating with the other "tanks" in his squadron. When the tanks finally arrived for training, Abrams squadron bested all the others.

Once when told something about enlisted men being "in the Army", Abrams corrected the speaker. "These privates and corporals aren't IN the Army, they ARE the Army"!

This book could/should be a leadership manual for a business school, or for West Point.
