Hi all,

Is it possible to rechamber a Kimber acsent 84L from 30-06 to 300 Win Mag or is the action not able to handle the pressure increase or possibly not able to physically fit?

Thanks in advance.

Moving to a larger case head diameter on the 84L bolt face would be a huge hurdle....

and what Brad says below.

The petite 84L/M actions are NOT designed for larger diameter mag cartridges. The list of hurdles, both in safety and mechanics, would be a pretty long one.

If you want a light 300 Mag, look at the 8400 WSM. It can easily be built with all-up weight (scope, mounts, sling and rounds) right at 7 lbs.

The Montana 8400 wsm actions are a good option. They have pretty close to a 3" mag box which gives you some good room to seat bullets out and mine have handled and fed the short mag rounds well. The kimber is the one rifle I always recommend the 300 wsm above the 300 win mag in.

Montana 8400 WSM's are wonderful. As stated, tons of COAL, which is a good thing.

They can do this:

Those are both 100-yard groups shot a couple weeks ago while laying on the ground with a Harris bipod and a rear beanbag. Kimber WSM's can shoot......

Might have to dust the Montana 300wsm off this season.

Josh, if you want to lighten your MT 300 WSM, replace the steel trigger bow with an aluminum one, get Talley X-Low Rings, a light scope like the Leupold 6x36, and the lightest (and perhaps best) sling around, the Butler Creek Mountain Sling. Heck, you could even cut the barrel 1" to 23" and give up almost nothing. A 180 from a 23" bbl with RL17 will still go 3K. I've done it.

Here's my un-lightened 300 WSM:

I dunno about lightening them. Recoil is significant. Mine is a 7 WSM and I was kinda GLAD for the extra weight of the Nightforce SHV! But then I do shoot it a whole lot from prone... I guess for a huntin' only rifle, lighter would be better.

Brad you still own an 8400?

Jeff, I only mention lightening it because the OP wanted a 300 WM on a Kimber Ascent that's even lighter! I find that quest a folly, and you can see by my photo I ditched Talley Lwt's and added a few ounces by going to all-steel Weaver Bases/Burris Zees, so that tells you what I think. If the 8400 MT WSM's had a no.2+ contour they'd be great. It has a terrific stock that really soaks up recoil, and feeds the fat-stubbies perfectly. It's just too muzzle light.

No, it's been replaced with what I think is a more intelligently designed platform for the 300 WSM, the M70 EW. I far and away prefer its heavier barrel contour over the too-light Kimber. It's the most accurate rifle I own. I swapped out factory bottom metal for PT&G aluminum, and I also swapped out the steel follower for the old USRAC aluminum one. It has a 3.5-10x40 CDS in X-Low Tally Lwt's. I'm going to put it in a Bansner, at which point it should weigh about 7lbs 12oz's with sling and rounds. Just right. Great rifle.

Good intel, Brad. Thanks!

I'm trying to talk a buddy into trying one of those EW's in 300 WSM.

My 7 WSM Montana is a half-pound heavier than many due to the NF SHV scope. While the "extra" weight isn't as ideal as it would be more forward- IE, in the barrel- I like it. I shoot it prone with no issues at 20-30 rounds at a sitting and I've got some recoil sensitivity since the head injury. Works for me!

Edit: Brad, how do you like the trigger on that FN M70?

Jeff, trigger is superb. I put an Ernie's trigger spring in it and adjusted it to 2.5 crisp lbs.

Aside Jeff, you may want to think about shooting the hard kickers in light of your accident... what's your doc say?
