Got one coming. Think it's about an early '69 in .308 Win.

Any problems or mandatory mods/fixes? Trigger work, etc?

It's got an old Weaver K6 on it which I'm taking off to out a receiver sight on. I'm thinking the WGRS. Most reviews sound like the front sight height should be fine.

Looking forward to using it as my main open sight practice gun this year (my buddy has a '54 or '55 in 30/06 he inherited from his grandpa and I loved shooting the thing).

Any thoughts appreciated...

The trigger kit I put in a 7600 was a big step forward.
Accurate too, bolt gun accurate.

Sounds like you're going to copy the late Larry Benoit's favorite configuration. IIRC, Larry liked a big/coarse bead front sight. If you're interested, I'm sure that he went into some detail in his book "How To Shoot The Biggest Buck Of Your Life".

I've always preferred the single sight plane of optics to opens, so the only CF pump gun that I have without optics is my 141 in 35 Rem that came to me with a Lyman 56/57 peep sight mounted in non-factory holes.

PS - There is a guy who advertised 760/7600 trigger jobs on eBay for $50, Phobos84.

Any particular kit or should I just google it?


I got a chuckle out of this one. Like many I saw advertised (from the Midwest, anyway) it has the see thru mounts on top. I grew up in Northern WI and these were everywhere along with the ubiquitous 336 and 94's. Never owned or shot one, though.

Definitely looking forward to it. Hell, maybe I'll take it hunting this year for S&G's!

Only other thing you might wanna do is run a few drops of light oil down the action guide tube (muzzle aimed down) and work the action a couple times...

If it's quiet, the O-ring is still there.. If it rattles, you need to replace the O-ring..

The Timney Trigger fix is the way to go.

Anybody know how to get a newer magazine to work properly in a 1950s 760?

Haven't shot mine in years. The trigger sucks, though it appears that is an easy fix. Interested in that Timney.

Mine is an old 1950's Game Master and newer magazines never fit well. They all need some filing.

What is your problem with newer magazines?

Use a barrel band type sling swivel if the action tube doesn't go through the fore end like a pump shotgun's.

Magazines will be the biggest problem because they are stamped from sheet metal and contort over time. The short actions ones like .308 are not so easy to find, while .270/06 are common. They also make after market ones, ebay is full of them. I've owned three 760's and killed several deer, never thought the trigger needed work. Good luck!

They're not hard to find since the 7600's fit them. But if you need a SA 760, I can probably dig one up for you. I don't have any SA 760/7600's.

You have yourself a great WI rifle. It's probably more accurate than your bolts.

stiab, I don't know where you came up with the idea that the magazines contort! Any 760/7600 magazine that I ever handled would need to have been pounded with a hammer to get it out of shape!

I suggest avoiding aftermarket magazines for these; I've tried several and never found one that was any good. The original short action mags aren't too hard to find though.

These are neat old guns. The trigger is basically 870 shotgun parts, and 870 youth 20 gauge stocks fit as well. You can make 12g 870 stocks fit but they'll take some fitting and are wider than the 760 receiver.

Personal experience, then googled it for a fix. Common problem with well used 760 mags, but not with the newer ones, which is exactly why the design was changed.

The contortion is small and not visible to the naked eye, but allows the mag to disconnect and drop slightly after firing, so the next round does not get picked up.

If anyone has an older 760 in 300 savage that they've lost the magazine for, a 308 mag. will work if you can't come up with the 300 sav. mag. They're hard to find!

Same is true for the .35 Rem, which are almost impossible to find, .308 will work.

Triggers are easy to work on. Spring change is the easiest to bring down the pull weight. You can carefully reduce the sear engagement and polish the surfaces and get a very nice crisp pull. Rebarreled one to 22-250 for my sons primary coyote rifle. Remington takeoff barrel and scary accurate. Feeds perfectly from a 243-308 magazine. Rifle was originally a 30-06. Dale

The only problem with mags is the little knob/notch on the back that holds the the mag up will wear down and no hold it properly. Will affect feeding. I've had them tig welded to build up the metal and filed it to proper shape. Otherwise they don't distort over time.


All the action lengths are the same no matter if it's a 308 or 30-06. One size fits all.
