This... There is a reason that percolators are seldom seen these days. Only use I have for one is one of the big 30 cup jobs that I can use to jump start a crew...

We have one at the camp too. I don't drink coffee, but just enjoy the noise it makes in the morning. I'm not the breakfast cook, so listen to that and decide to stir once I start smelling bacon.

Good times.

We always perk coffee at camp.. When the camp was in it's heyday we used a 25 cup Cabela's stainless steel pot. Now that it's down to just 2 of us I picked up a 6 cup stainless one from the Vermont Country store.. Makes great coffee! We had one of those glass ones when i was a kid..

I'm all for nostalgia, but waking up to fresh hot coffee waiting patiently in an insulated carafe is a tough act to follow.

I can still taste that nasty burned sludge that came out of the big urn we used at work in the early '70s after a couple of hours. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger, I guess.

Definitely have to use coarse ground. The stuff made for coffee makers is too fine without a paper filter.

I have one just like the OP sitting on the shelf that was my Mother's.

Drip coffee was considered an improvement in taste over perked.
Percolators make more cups with less coffee.
I'm leery of using an aluminum percolator since coffee is acidic, you might ingest too much aluminum.

I prefer pressed but normally a drip unit is used for ease.
I perk while camping and stuff but it's such a mess especially when water is limited.

I HATE instant coffee with a passion. This Folgers stuff is a great deal. Heat a little water somehow and drop in a pack or two. Great for that quick cup while camping and zero mess.

We have gone perked for most of our coffee for years. When we moved to Oregon and got this new fangled electricity we went to an electric perk on a timer. I have to say it beats waiting for an hour or more for the wood cook stove to heat up enough to perk the coffee. Even in out little camp trailer it is perked. We like it the best.

I'm trying to find the stainless steel version. (Locally) my brother refuses to drink coffee brewed in aluminum, since cooking or eating off of aluminum has been linked to alzheimer's.

the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.

I've got a small closet full of various coffee brewing equipment, but I came full circle a year ago and brew my coffee each morning with a percolator.

I use a stove top model because I get total control over the brew, and there aren't any electrical components to crap out on me.

It takes me 20 minutes to brew a pot. The ONLY downside (which I'm reminded of every morning) is that my day sucks for the first 20 minutes while I wait! cry

But the results are worth it.

That's another reason I use a stove top model...........lots of stainless options.

I've researched electric perks, and based on reviews, they're not built to last................like they were during the golden era of electric perk use when they were still made in the USA. Ebay is a great source for the older good ones, but I think most of them have aluminum guts.

^^^ What he said.

The trick is to use more ground coffee than you use in a drip coffee maker and don't let it perk forever.

I have one of those three cup Bialetti mocha gadgets that I like a lot. It actually makes one small cup of REALLY strong coffee. One or two's plenty for me.

I also have a small drip unit and a big SS percolaator that I use when I have guests in town but 99% of the time it's the little mocha maker.

Oh...and a small percolator in the camp box.

I use my Bialettis occasionally too, but tend to over-medicate if I'm not careful.
