Does anyone have experience with a 50mm objective scope on a Remington model seven? I've been a 40mm (or 36mm ) objective scope guy forever ,but have grown to like the bigger 50mm scopes.

Does it feel top heavy? For discussion, I'm not talking about the 50 or 56mm objective Leupold VX-L or VX3-L that sits lower on the gun.

Thanks in advance.

Why? You would definitely screw up the handling plus make the rifle look like the rifle was mounted on the scope instead of the other way around.

I have a Monarch UCC 3-9×40 on a Seven with 20" bbl and it's larger than I would like but it's what I had free at the time to mount. A 50mm is going to look (and handle) like an abomination on that gun, but if that's what YOU want, that's all that matters.

IMO a 32-36mm is about perfect on a Seven.

I picked up a Ruger 7 mm stainless that had a 50 mm bell Leupold 3 x 9. I didn't think I would like it at first. Big and awkward, but after using it in the desert I really like it! Clear at first light, and near dark. Not much good for a brush country gun, but I have others for that!

Had a friend who put a VX3 3.5-10x50 on a Model 7. I had a FX2 6x36 on a 20" sporter barrel SPS.

We met at the top of a field overlooking a pecan grove one evening. He was proud of that monstrosity setting on his rifle. He handed it to me for a look-see. The pecan grove had white 3/4" pvc watering sprinklers set up between every other tree...standing about 2' high. I could not see any through his scope.

I handed him my rifle with the fixed 6x. He was able to count 3 sprinkler heads through my scope. He quickly became dissatisfied with that monster scope on that compact/lw rifle.

Fortunately, I had been there done that.

In my humble opinion, it is the quality of glass that renders clearity...not the diameter of it.

Most Moon Scope owners buy them thinking they will be able to see in the dark.

There is only one 50mm in my safe. Drank the Kool Aid when they were pushing it, realized there was nothing to gain, and never bought another. It's a Swarovski too, so not like it was poor quality glass. It might as well be a telescope, as it hasn't seen the light of day in years.

One of the reasons I don't have any Zeiss scopes. Once you get above 9 power, they put a 50-55mm objective on it and you have a top heavy rifle with no distinct advantage over a 40-44mm.

At times you need to use a rifle for a certain type of hunting .
Myself I night hunt hogs out of pop-up blinds or shooting house and my 4x12-50 VXR Leupold scope is the best I have .
I'm going to trim the rifle herd a bit down the road and might put that scope on my M-Seven 308 --maybe -- but I know it will mess up the feel of the light rifle. But it would be nice inside a small blind at night.
Otherwise for a model seven -I don't like a scope bigger than 36mm objective lens size .

Why?

When my cataracts were getting bad but not bad enough to operate, a 50mm helped in low light conditions. More in the afternoon in failing light, than morning in gaining light, but some in both times. I had 2 model sevens and a 50mm on one and a 40mm on the other and saw little difference in handling. The one with the 50mm has since been re-barreled with a longer and heavier barrel and the stock weighted to make it balance as I like it. It still wears the 50mm scope and I like it. I have killed a lot stuff with that rifle and several here at the fire have shot it at our gatherings. Never heard any complaint. miles

That's stupid. I don't have 50mm scopes on little guns either but come on. Your post makes it sound like pvc isn't visible with a 3.5-10x50 but is with a fixed 6. The scope might not be your cup of tea but if you couldn't see through it ...it ain't because of the objective size.

Put a VX-I on my new Tikka 6.5x55. Keeps the rifle light, handy, and I see just fine with it. Biggest scopes I have are 42mm, both M8 6x42s on larger rifles. Otherwise, 36mm and smaller.

I had one on a Model Seven and never once felt like it affected the balance of it. I bought into the hype and put a 40mm on it. I'll be going back to a 50mm.

My post was not intended to make it sound like pvc isn't visible with a 3.5-10x50. I am telling you plainly that under the same light conditions, the 6x was faster and better at picking up details (the pvc pipe) amongst the pecan trees.

What is stupid, is miscomprehending a post, and drawing a conclusion.

I recently bought a VX-6 2-12x42 which weighs just over a pound. It will be the biggest scope for me in a half century of using rifles.

Yep,scopes seem to be getting bigger and heavier all the time. My favorites are 2-7's. Right now my main hunting scope is a Vortex Razor 1.5-8X32. I'm in the minority though because it seems everyone else in Alabama wants a 50mm or even larger.

My new Winchester Featherweight Compact needed a scope. When I got a great deal on a Meopta scope with a 44 objective, I jumped on it.

http://www.meoptasportsoptics.com/shop/us/3-5-10x44/meopro-3-5-10x44/ctgRus.html. Although it is a little bigger than I wanted, it doesn't look horrible and the optical quality makes it worth it.

Would I go to 50? No. It just isn't necessary.
