What do I not want to miss in San Antonio? Aside from the Alamo. Going in the AM, will have a rental car and free time Thurs, Friday & Saturday. Any gunshops near riverwalk area?

Staying on Riverwalk at the Westin. I'm guessing no gun shops in the area?

It all sounds good. My wife has a conference that ends Friday at noon so we decided to make a weekend of it to look around. Have to take a walk to Whataburger, haven't had one of those for 40 years.

I heard that song a hundred times just before we moved here from Florida. One of my guys played it over the police radio my last night on the road.

Mi Tierra's at the Mercado for at least Breakfast is real close.
Dury's isn't far from downtown if you want to gun shop.

Bluebonnets are already out. Since you have a rental car, you could drive out to Luckenbach for a beer and live music if you've got time to kill. Always a favorite destination when we have friends in from out of state.
Also since you've got a car, you could pretty easily drive to Dury's Gun Shop, or Nagel's Gun Shop, but they are most definitely NOT near downtown.
You might check out the Pearl. They have converted the old brewery into hotels, restaurants, and shops. The Granary is good for BBQ. La Gloria is good for Mexican food.
When we have friends in town, though, we usually take them to La Fogata, and sit outside, for Mexican food [and drinks], but you'll need to drive out I10 west about 10 minutes to get there [and google the exact location].
If you're into history, you might also walk over to San Fernando Cathedral, from which Santa Anna hoisted the "no quarter" flag at the beginning of the siege. You should also probably catch the "San Antonio/The Saga" video from Main Plaza (pretty cool laser light show, using the Cathedral itself as the screen).
Drop by the bar at the Menger hotel on your way to or from the Alamo and pay homage to Teddy Roosevelt.
Take the elevator up to the top of the Tower of the Americas. They are doing some construction down around it, but you could still easily walk from your hotel. You can also grab a bite to eat while you're there. The whole top rotates slowly while you're up there, giving you an interesting view of the city.
Have a nice trip!
