Yeah, I'll go $550! laugh They both appear refinished, but it was done right and look fantastic! The 30-30 is just a smidge older than my SRC so that puts it at about 1901-1902 range. Nice guns, thanks for the pics. I'm sure someone that know a lot more than me will be around soon with more info.

Oh just looking at the non factory wood and embellishments, you gotta figure they didn't go to all that trouble to throw that wood on old blue. Everything looks too perfect.

How much does the refinishing hurt the value?

Top one started life as an early 50's 99R, but stock has been replaced and beautiful checkering added. Second rifle is a model 1899A probably made in 1900. Somebody loved those guns and put a lot of money into restoring them.

Valuing restored/custom guns is a lot harder than putting a value on original condition guns. We can draw upon sales records and personal experience to value the originals. Customs as nice as these don't come onto the market often enough to establish a track record.

I would tally up what it would cost to duplicate all that work, which would entail a lot of research, and use that as a replacement value for insurance purposes. A fraction (not a small fraction, but a fraction nonetheless) of that figure for a realistic sale price. It's just too nebulous an undertaking to stand here and put a price tag on them. An auction setting would be the true barometer of their worth, but worthless if you aren't selling them. (Kind of like wondering how a bear's tooth feels in the hand but the only way to find out is to kill it.)

I assume the gentleman you purchased the 99s from has passed away, but do you know if he had the work done? Is there anyone you can contact who knew the gentleman who might have the answer? This might be a good place to start your research. That is, figuring out who did the restorations.

As stated above, the first one is a 50's rifle. It's restocked with a great piece of wood and checkering similar to the "C" pattern used on the early rifles. Excellent work.

Does the second one have a 22" barrel? Its either a Short Rifle that shipped with a crescent butt or the barrel has been shortened.

Yes he has passed and the guy that knew him that set the deal up has passed also, I can't remember the original owners name right off hand . I'll have to do some checking.

I'll check the length of barrel this evening and I found the other 99 (I was sure I had 3) in the other safe that I will get some pics of also.

Thanks,RJ
