FL=Full length resize dies? Why do some die sets come with three dies, other two. Do some sets include a neck die, and full length?

Die sets for straight walled cases have to have three dies. One for decapping and sizing, one for bell the case mouth prior to seating a bullet and one for bullet seating.
Die sets for bottle necked cases have to have two dies. One for decapping and sizing and one for bullet seating; none is needed to bell the neck of the case.
It can get a little more complicated. There are neck sizing dies that can be used in liu of a full length sizing die. I will sometimes neck size most of the time and occasionally full length size; in this case a set of dies for a bottle necked case will have 3 dies but strictly speaking only two are required. Also, at times I use a Lee Factory Crimp die which isn't required but is useful at times.

Die sets for straight walled cases have to have three dies. One for decapping and sizing, one for bell the case mouth prior to seating a bullet and one for bullet seating. OK, I'm confused. This for a .308 Win, aren't all .308 win cases the same? I have seen .308 Win dies in two and three die sets. "one for bell the case mouth prior to seating a bullet" Why would one need to open the case mouth after resizing, a .308 is .308, why would some .308 bullets require the mouth to be opened after neck sizing and others not? Thanks for your help.

Barkoff, Redding offers a deluxe set for bottleneck cases; it includes a FL sizing die, a necksiziing die, and a bullet seater/crimping die - that is the basic three die set for bottleneck cases that I am aware of. Seems that all the die makers are offering many variations of sets today (bushing die sets, competition sets, etc., - just lots of differing packaging offerings for their dies) Additionally Lyman offers an "M" die, which does expand necks for bottleneck cases - these are for the guys who load lead bullets in rounds such as the 30/30, 30-06, etc. I once had a Lyman "M" die for loading lead bullets in a .348 WCF. I think RCBS still offers a special expander plug to accomplish the same task. Odessa

The RCBS 3 die sets are for straight walled cases. The third die is used to "bell" the case mouth to allow bullet seating without risking crushing the case. Bottle neck sets are two die unless they contain a neck sizer also. Redding is the most common of these I`m aware of.
