I'm on the hunt for a steel service pistol in 40 S&W, mostly for informal bullseye-type shooting. Caliber selection is for uniformity of reloading or bulk ammo orders. It needs to have a shootable SA pull and be accurate enough for 6" plates at 50 yards. An old Commander size Para 14-40 would be about ideal. Believe I could also learn to like the CZ-75.
If you guys have any input on any of these 40's, with particular attention to accuracy, I'd appreciate it.

Why a .40 S&W again? Can you expand on your preference?

Maybe a .40 cal Hi-Power. Mine is pretty accurate, but you'll need some trigger work probably.

Sarge, I looked for a CZ-75B in .40 for quite a while and had to settle for a P-06 with alloy frame. I like it and it's accurate but, still wish for a 75B. Maybe a Tangfolio can be had in .40?

I had a Hi Power in 9mm and liked it and always wondered about the pistol in .40. I always like the idea of up scaling the Hi Power platform to .40 better than down scaling the 1911 platform to .40. My apologies for drifting OT but I second the above comment on the browning in .40. It is a nice size pistol.

A few months ago I was in Cabela's Gun Library. The fella told me that they do not want anymore .40 S&W's. They will buy them but at a reduced price since they have so many. I forget the figure he gave me of how many they have around the country. But it was a lot. I ask why. He said people are going back to 9mm or .45ACP.

I have a CZ-75B in 40 S&W, and it's everybody's favorite on family outings. 6" plates? Shucks, the CZ will do a lot better than that at 50 yards.

they are very nice pistols for the money , with an excellent trigger ..... If I wanted a pistol for bullseye I'd probably go with a 1911. That said, my only remaining .40 is a Springfield Armory P-9 which, like the EAA Witness, is a Tanfoglio CZ-75 clone. It's been a pretty good pistol, but I don't use it much.

STI and Sig do 1911s in .40 that I know of.
You mentioned a 14/40, which I believe was a double stack...? If so, very accurate 2011s are available from STI and a lot of custom and semi-custom makers.
I know next to nothing about the CZs, except that their Tac Sport models come in .40 and can have very nice SA triggers.

Look at https://czcustom.com They have several CZ75 configurations in 40 S&W. I've got them replacing a barrel on a 75B and doing an action job on it while it's there now.

Thanks for all the replies and particularly Beoceorl who covered what I was looking for on the 75- and has a great sig line to boot.
I like the Hi Power, had an Argentine 9mm years ago that shot real well. This gun will be run one-handed on plates and bullseyes so it'll need a decent trigger. The Sigs & STI 1911's are great guns Blue, just a tad more than I want to sink in a hobby gun. Right now the CZ-75 looks good, mostly because I shot one in 9mm awhile back and really liked it. The trigger mechanism is straightforward and I could clean that up myself.

I've had both and wish I still had both of them lol. The 1911 I had was a para, double stack mag model. I don't remember the model # but it was a full size and shot very well. I sold it to find another purchase. Wish I had it still, but the .222 I bought with the proceeds is NOt a purchase I regret.
The cz75b I had I bought right here off the classifieds. I have had their .45 (97b) for a long time had had lusted over a .40 for just as long. It was a damned fine shooter as well. My only gripe was that it was an earlier model with a smaller beaver tail and after a couple mags the slide was liberally coated with blood. Every time.
My next .40 will be the cz SP01 tactical.

I never was a 9mm fan - until all the good ammo has come out. HST etc. Street stats show good results when the chips are down.
Nothing against a 40 but I've lost interest - personally. Its Ballistics are good no doubt. They all have pros and cons.
The CZ has a great reputation. 1911's scream 45 to me except the small Kimber Micro and Springfield EMP in 9.
Many Sig owners are happy if that's an option.

Can't go wrong with the CZ-75.
I just do not like the .40 S&W for high volume shooting. Too Hot. Combat, but not Bullseye shooting. I have seen veteran shooters develop flinching using to big of a load for precision shooting. That's a fact. There are no exceptions.
The .38 Super or .45 ACP fills the bill.
Hobby shooting?---- who cares. Except for developing bad habits. Maybe.

If he's handloading, I don't know why you'd think the loads will be hot.
The softest load I shoot at steel is .40. 3 grains of Clays and a 180 grain bullet is softer than 115grain 9mm IMO.

The 40 is a pussycat in the CZ-75. Even my girls enjoyed shooting it when they were in the early teens. The trigger was a bit of a reach in DA, but they were able to reach the trigger okay in SA mode.
