I'm just a hunter wanting to sharpen up my skills at longer range which to me would be 400-500 yards. I want to develop some loads for a custom turret and do some long range accuracy testing without spending a mint.

I'd steer away from the custom turret and just go with one marked in MOA. Vortex Ranger will do just fine and not hard to find for a few hundred.

Competition Electronics ProChrono, Made in the USA, under $100. This^ I firmly believe in buying a rangefinder rated for a lot more than you think you'll need. A 1000 yd rangefinder quickly becomes a 400 yd rangefinder when atmospheric conditions are poor and you've got a less than perfect target.

This. Can't beat it for the price, nothing else even comes close. Yep, hands down the best chrony outside Oehler and for around $100. I've had one for around 15 years and rarely has it failed to give a reading.
