Greetings,
A friend in possession of a Remington 660 chambered in 6.5 Remington Magnum has asked me about what he could do to improve the usability of the rifle. He's considering a barrel and stock swap but doesn't reload and is thinking about running a different cartridge for ease of access to ammunition. And this is where I'm stumped by the re-chamber options available in what's likely a shorter action length (I haven't found those specs online) with a 0.532 bolt face.
What are the/Are there cartridge options I'm not thinking of which will allow use of the action he has in-hand to potentially make the gun more of a "daily driver" for range & hunting?
Or, as I'm not certain the rifle holds any sentimental value, should he simply consider selling the rifle to fund a replacement?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

While not exactly "rare", a nice condition 660 in 6.5 has a bit of collector value. I hate to see nice, collectible guns "butchered" to become something easier to feed. He'd be able to sell the gun for enough to buy most any modern standard production rifle in whatever plain vanilla chambering he desires. Just my 2 cents. If he's dead-set on rebarreling the 6.5, the WSMs, SAUMs or RCMs would likely work.

Some folks like these...he should sell it to one of them and get a rifle he wants.
Or just hang it on the wall and do the same... he would be money ahead.

He's on his way towards making a $1,200 rifle into a $500 rifle :-)

Redbreast,
Buy a different rifle. Sell it, or pretend he does not own it and save it till its worth more.

I'd leave it alone! Nothing wrong with a 6.5 Rem Mag.
It's able to push a 120 gr bullet to 3200 fps. Don't know what more you would need. He'll gain no benefit from reinventing the wheel.

Do not, I repeat, do not chinger up that rifle. I have 2, 6.5 mags. A 600 that was my only deer rifle for about 10 years and a 700, that I read in Shooting Times, that Remington only made 1500 of. Best mule deer caliber I've ever owned. Flat and deadly. Also, most people think the 130gr and 140gr bullets are best in the 6.5, but not so. The best hunting bullet I have found is the 125gr Partition. Any bullet heavier/longer will place the ogive into the case neck due to the 6.5s limitation of 2.8 inch magazine length. I do not like loading ammo that way. Beg borrow or steal and then hoard all the brass you can find and you will have the best, most unique rifle/caliber combination in any hunting camp. Good luck and hunt away.

Go down to Walmart, buy a 270 or 30-06 and trade it for the 6.5 He will be happy and you can go kill stuff with it.

Sell it or trade it and get what he really wants. No point in dumping money into a rifle that is moving into the collector's realm when it will only decrease any future value and be a compromise he didn't want to begin with.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

A perfectly good 660 in 6.5 Mag is NOT a donor...
Repeat...
Go with above suggestions.
