Idaho Power is the main power company in so. Idaho. We have quite a few dams and they produce lots of hydro power. However, the feds require them to buy wind and solar power and pass it on to us. This power is more expensive to produce than hydro but IP must pay for it anyway and pass it on to us. Right now, the dams are producing more juice than IP can handle yet they still have to buy the wind and solar power. It all has to go somewhere so the hydro power production has been curtailed, even with all that free water flowing over the dams.

Welcome to Kalifornia's power plan, RC. When the state of Kalifornia's voters went for 20% of their power from wind or solar, my electric bill doubled. And I still qualify for the cheapest rates due to my age and small home. What did our voters, who weren't told of this cost do ? They let the legislature raise that to 50% in the years to come. Heck, we haven't even reached to 20% level yet. E

I'd like to see ethanol the hell out of gasoline too. Monumental failure, not to mention detrimental to all motors.

I bet river will still be fluctuating 10ft every day and night when we float Hell's Canyon this Summer, though.

Apparently hydro power isn't green enough. They should require wind and solar companies to buy hydro power.

Hydro, supplement with nat gas. Take down any wind or solar that does not work without Gov't Subsidies.

The funny thing is that I have colleagues in both Northern California and Southern Oregon with quite large geothermal resources, and they can't find anyone interested in buying the power. No interest, and the regulatory cost to develop it is prohibitive.

Our normal residential rates are 8 cents winter and 8.5 cents summer. At one time, before the feds started mandating that they buy green power, they offered people a chance to buy green power should they decide to use it. People who wanted to got the privilege of paying more for it. I doubt they got many takers. It was rather stupid since our regular power is mostly hydro which is every bit as green as wind or solar.

I ran a supposed 500w heater for a few weeks in my boat during a cold snap. Over a $160 power bill. I'd kill for .09c per kw hour. My boat would have multiple heaters running all winter.

10-11 cents here.
I have an old meter, wired into a meter base, in line in a short extension cord. If I have things I wonder about, an old freezer for example, I put the meter on that ONLY, and read it to see what that alone is costing me. Found out that way, that we had freezers and fridges on our property that cost twice as much as others to run. Junked and bought new appliances as it paid for itself...

So they don't buy power, they only sell it at ridiculously high prices to whoever owns the grid. Our local electric coop. generates electricity with hydro power and when the lakes are low they use natural gas. Natural gas is MUCH cheaper than wind or solar. The Feds subsidize wind and solar construction but the power company has to build the network the get the green energy to the power grid. Our coop has become infiltrated with socialist/Democrats from Austin and they are pushing for green energy.

I have an old meter, wired into a meter base, in line in a short extension cord. You can buy small devices that plug into an outlet, and let you check different things very easily. miles
