I was browsing online today and found a Remington Model 58. The engraving got me breathing hard and I'm thinking I'll need one choked IC in 20 or 16 gauge. What do y'all say? Good, Bad?

I've only dealt with two. But neither worked reliably unless magnum shells were used. The "engraving" is just a roll stamp BTW

Born poor Mississippi boy. That roll engraving looks fancy to me! I'll have have to find one for a good deal then.

I owned one in 12 gauge that was bought in 1960 by my cousin. The shotgun was Remington's first successful gas operated semi-auto. Mine operated reliably once I replaced the broken flat spring in the magazine tube (half the tube is for shells and their spring, the other half is for the gas piston and it's spring). Broken flat coil springs are the culprit in causing bad operation in this shotgun - get the coil spring made of music wire (I believe it was a Wolfe). I liked the roll engraving too, but I also liked the post-66 Winchester burnt checkering - ain't no accounting for taste!

What do y'all say? Good, Bad? I got one for Christmas when I was 12, in 16 gauge. Full choke barrel for many years then I got another in IC, and it was my quail gun for many years. Very reliable. I never had any problem using light load or switching to heavy. Only drawback was the 3 shell limit. miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

They have their quirks and there is a reason why they faded away fairly quickly. The gas system action is somewhat fragile and hard to clean properly. My suggestion? If you want a vintage gun from the early 50's try an 11-48. Or get an early 1100.

Have a 12 upstairs I inherited from my FIL. Worked fine with normal ammo the 3 or 4 times I took it rabbit hunting. If a 12 is of interest, give me a shout and we will see if we can make a deal.
Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~
