I've posted variations of this before, but here goes again.

My first centerfire rifle was given to me by my father in 1964. It was a Remmy bolt in .308. I have used it and other .308s many times over the years since, and both of my sons started their big game hunting with .308s. We have taken deer, hogs, elk, and moose with them, using 150, 165, and 180-grain bullets, and have had nothing to complain about. The .308 offers a wonderful combination of shootability, versatility, accuracy, and lethality, and is very effective on the game mentioned above out to 300 yards (with proper bullets). It isn't a very sexy-looking cartridge, and it doesn't offer eye-popping velocities, but it works!
I now do almost all of my hunting with either a .30-06 or a .308, and I can tell little real-world difference between the two in terminal effect on game animals. In fact, the only time I can discern a difference is at the range: the '06 shoots slightly flatter and kicks harder.

The only thing I get a kick out of is, the controversy of 30cal vs. 7mm and smaller. If one kills better with a 30 than a 6.5 or 7mm. The industry could save a fortune by not making anything smaller than 30 cal. I guess some folks just don't get it!
The animals you killed weren't supposed to happen!![Linked Image]

This all tongue in cheek but seriously, if I load up my 257 AI with a pathetic little 100 grain NP and my brother kills another moose with it, I'm gonna scream!!!

Well . . . .

I get 2800 FPS out of my 308 shooting 200 grain Nosler Partitions using a 20 inch barrel.

I accomplish this by using the John Barsness handloading system--I just write those numbers on the box an go hunting . . . . (grin).

Otherwise, the 308 is a fine round and has killed 80% of thge big game I have taken.

The 30-06 is fine round.

The 7-08 is a fine round.

The 8x57 is a fine round.

ad infinitum . . . .

Oh, by the way . . .

The only thing I have seen proven in this thread is that Shane (Montana Marine) can shoot!

My fault, the main reason I posted the question was now that I have a 308 I kinda wanted to know what people have hunted with it and what the results were. If I can save 1 1/2 lbs of rifle vs. say a standard 30'06 rifle am I really giving much up in real world hunting?

One of my brothers liked it for its shortness, making for a lighter rifle, quicker action.

I know I had to use my ruger ultralight in 308 standing up and take three quick shots and I was surprised how slick it went, and how it performed.
I like the 308 myself.

my 2 cents your not giving up to the 30-06 with a 308.I prefer the 308 myself over the 30-06 and one of reasons is and i will admit bullet selection is the case in this situation but as a kid when hunting the north country those 06 would travel fast enough that the wound seemed to heel it's self and not leave a good trail. With that said i do not know what was there bullet selection and i'm positive that was problem
My father's deer rifle for the northern hunting was a pre64 win mod 70 308 win that i now have and part of my preference is do to the nostalgia of that rifle and fond memories of hunting with him

Ah, the old "cauterizing 06 scenario"!
I hate it when that happens!

I wonder what the super-mags do? Broil?

But that velocity makes her so flat shooting, all you gotta do is hold on the top of the shoulders, out to 700 yards......or was that the .270????

There is nothing that I would ever say negative about a .308!!! I have killed out to 327 yards with it!! I have a buddy who shoots long range competion with one... it's the most popular caliber in america today,(according to HEARTLAND magizine)...I love my .308 wouldn't take anything for it!!!

You can do it too. Just get a piece of masking tape, a Magic Marker, and a box of ammo. Then write whatever speed you choose on the tape and slap it on the box. No one will know the diff.

Just wondering how people feel about this cartridge, what have you hunted with it? Anything it won't do? Favorite load?

i love it cuz it works for pretty much everything in the lower 48 @ "normal" ranges

I've seen three deer shot with a 308 and they ran off.

For a flop bang fan that was the deal breaker.

Dey always went flop bang wid a .270.

Just my experience.

Interesting note, I held that Vietnam era Rem re-make this evening and it felt "oh so good" in the hands. You know how you pick up a rifle and it fits. But, it is a .308 and I gotta get my calculator out to shoot it. BLAHHHHHh. Actually I serious.

FINALLY HELD A REM TI TONITE IN 7-08. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET. MARKUS DOBER, I B LIK'EN IN MO'BETTER THAN LIL' SKY. Just felt better, and that spiral bolt got me also.

Best of luck my friends. My wifffe says all I talk about is rifles, and gearslut camping/hiking/hunting gear. Hell honey-bunny, I'm buying one for you also. Did not work.

So I thought I would buy a darn heavy .308, a ton of ammo, and give her time to comtemplate not hearing my voice for a week.

Too bad a 308 won't even kill a german shepard Louisiana whitetail. Shame.

Ok, so we have established that at long ranges, the .308 is more accurate. Now, how about this argument...the .30-06 has more deadly than the .308 to big game. The energy of the .30-06 averages about 400ft-lbs more. It appears that the velocities are only a bit higher, but still enough to be significant. The .30-06 easily hits 3,000 or more and the .308 struggles to hit 2,800.
