Next month will be our 7th annual "Gramp Camp". My kids and their kids backpack about a mile and a half to our secret spot and stay overnight. The company varies but can include my six sons, one son in law and about 20 grand kids from 3 to 17 years old.
The older members of course sit around the fire and regale the youngsters with humor and wisdom. We usually have a compass course with real or imagined treasure at the end.

I usually try to have a surprise for the Grand Kids.
In the past I have brought:
Hiking staff with their name burned in.
Wrist Rocket (sling shot)
Survival Rope
A vest for the little ones to put pins on that they earn
Compass
And a few more I can't think of.

Question: What can I get or make this year?
I have thought of a knife but will probably need something else for the little ones.

I've always found that youngsters like a monocular they can carry, or a good small flashlight, of their very own.

Those trips can be a lot of fun. We don't have any kids left in the area, so, I improvised...our church has a small, newly organized boy scout troop. Last summer I took them on a llama pack trip. We have another one planned for this summer.

All the kids like flashlights.
Maybe a headlamp so they can run around all night.
I haven't thought of a monocular..they would like that

Fire starter kit my be a good thing. Everyone should be able to start a fire with very little, except what they carry.

Good idea.
I am involved with the Boy Scouts and half of the new ones don't even know how to strike a match!

Pocketknife, even a duller one that can later be sharpened a bit more. Gots to be able to make marshmallow stickers for roasting.

Flashlights and headlamps are good ideas, as are firestarter kits. For the kits I'd show them how to make them.

Small pair of binoculars. The travel size Simmons or Tasco are cheap and open up the world to youngsters.

A hearty thumbs up to you, grandpa and welcome to the fire.

A good headlamp can be invaluable. About 5 years ago I had a 2 mile hike off the side of a steep mountain in the dark and rain, trying to operate a trekking pole with 1 hand and control my rifle with the other. Holding a flashlight in my mouth would have made my jaws sore.
