Friend of mine from Maine told me a joke once.
"Where's the best place to shoot a moose?"
Right beside the truck.

It's not a joke. Landing strip, river bank, quad trail, all good. Otherwise swamp donkey has the last laugh.

guys the dates can be changed to what works for the group.
if we do it earlier, with the warmer temps i don't think you will get as much out of the training. if we do it in nov/dec we will freeze our asses off.
it is only 1 weekend out of the hunting season. i hunt ak. as well and i feel that this is worth the time and money for your safety and knowledge. y.m.m.v..
moose packing is not part of the class.

When I was stationed at Eielson AFB in North Pole AK, I took the three day USAF Arctic Survival course. It was -42 the nights we stayed in our snow caves.
Taught me a lot about will, and more about the need to remain calm.
Plus, it looks cool (pun intended) on my resume.
$500? 'Nuthing compared to the value received, IMHO.

Wouldn't shoot a 10 mile moose.... Though 3 miles tempted me one time very severely..... Time left before pickup and distance, even though close to a decent winter trail on foot , disallowed anything but a photo through the scope.....
I'm thinking 1.5 miles might be about as far away from anything I'd really want to attempt. Middle of landing strip is good. River bank only ok if shot anchors and won't roll or move.... Middle of quad trail also good. Relatives in BC used to say they'd drive up and down the Alcan till they could bust one in the neck or head in the middle of the alcan.... and tell everyone else to go around.... I can see why. CNS shots I"d think can be a must in some circumstances....hope to find out....

dave;
$500 is the most it can cost if we only have the minimum # of 6 students.
if we get 10-12 students then maybe $375-400. more students to split the costs, less tuition.
per his web site he teaches woodland, arctic, water, jungle and desert survival.
anyone have any ideas on where to hold this class? state park or military base open to public recreation....

Cold Zero, if he holds it on park land he might have to pay a users fee or whatever they call it. Larry Csonka got caught filming without a permit and got into a heep of trouble over it. I know he is not doing any filming but he is using the land commercially so that might be worth looking into. If your looking for a remote place to do this I would look for an area just south of the Brooks Range, somwhere between Coldfoot and Atigun Pass.

With the grandiose claims on the website I would question why he would be willing to run a class for just $3k... He makes it sound like he has much bigger things going on...
Take expenses out of the tuition and there is little in the way of profit for him, atop basic wages... art
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

Having gone through some training with learn to return, I'd highly recomend them for survival training. Brian trained airmen to survive behind enemy lives, and they've been around for 20 years. http://www.survivaltraining.com/index.htmlGuranteed to learn alot and have a great time.

I've been to 3 of the LTR classes, they do a good job.
You could get your face slapped by asking the wrong person to go camping with Myke Hawke.... Sounds like one of those say this fast 3 times things...
