Very nice article on the 300 H&H cartridge in this months Sports Afield magazine. A few nice accolades given to the pre 64 Winchester model 70 in the write up. Almost bought the magazine but could not get the $8.99 out of my wallet to do so.

Just to ad my admiration of both the 'pre 64' Model 70 and the 300 H&H cartridge. The round particularly easy feeding in context of itself 'pre', as in 'pre' the sharp shoulder angle of such as the 300 Win Mag. I've not had trouble with the latter, so perhaps more theoretical. Still, to admire the H&H as a classic and sustaining! Two 'pre' Model 70 300 H&H rifles of mine.. One yet another 'pre' category... as in 'prewar'. The other early fifties vintage. My 300 Win Mag 'pre 64 Model 70 at the opposite end of the quality spectrum from the earlier guns, especially the 'prewar'. The action rougher and the stock simply not the quality. Yet still, a Winchester. Functional and the 300 Win chambering, only produced for a short period in the 'pre 64' config., making the rifle more $$$ & 'collectible'. Also have a Remington Model 721 and it from the early fifties too. A standard appearing, largely undistinguished 721 profile, only the factory recoil pad and nomenclature to advise the 'big boy' chambering. Those Models 721 & 722, wiht utilitarian contenance and long consigned to the 'also ran'. Yet entirely competent in all chamberings.

Just the aside, a personal long time love affair with 7times 3: The 7mm Mauser, 7mm-08 Rem & 7mm Remi Mag. Happily, with a few rifles du jour in these chamberings. Yet sorry, getting too far afield.

A definite 'thumbs up' for the 300 H&H and accolades for the 'pre 64 Win 70' rifles . Together, a great combo!
Also re magazine... Definitely with you! Sad what's happening to "print editions" everywhere. Oh brave new world! Yet in this arena, definitely 'not my printer's keeper'! Plenty of info re such cartridge and applicable rifles; all on the Internet.

If I had much disposable income, even a lot of it, I would be happy with only three Pre '64 M70 rifles: .270, .300 H&H, and .375 H&H. At one time Dave Riffle had all three for sale, all made in '53, the year I was born. I was tempted, but I really didn't have the scratch, though I definitely had the itch :-), plus I cannot say I trusted the seller well enough to suit me. I think it is a damn shame so many .300 H&H rifles were subjected to Weatherby reamers!

I enjoyed the article. I have two pre64 70's in the 300 &H a std and a SG. I wish I had read it earlier as a dealer had a Ruger #1 in 300 H&H and I considered it but passed. IF I had known they only made 250 of them it would be in my safe waiting for a scope:)

Sports Afield IMHO is the best big game hunting magazine available today. I enjoy every issue and I know you'll love the 300 H&H.

I was also born in 1953. My Model 70 300 H&H was born in 1956.
