my dad has a model 20 250-3000 that he has hunted with for the last 55 years. ... does anyone know where i could get a front beed or front sight ...
wade,
Did you find a sight? I don't know of any currently available from manufacturers. If you want new, old stock (NOS) sights, the best place to look is ebay. I have tried to win some recent auctions, and prices have gone up in the last year. Otherwise, gunshows and specialty sight shops may help, if this forum can't.
Marble's #16, Lyman #26 or #32 will work. "White metal", "gold", ivory, and ivory substitute beads are available. Redfield also has one available with red bead; I don't recall model #. Lyman gold bead should be original equipment. I'm sure there is a King bead-style front sight for it. The King "mirror" front sights have recently passed through ebay for post-style sight picture.
You need a blade that is 0.064" wide at the base. They should be about 11/32" high to work with your rear sight and cartridge. Too high or too low will cause you grief when sighting in, (unless you like a six o'clock hold...) Take your caliper, if trying at a gunshow. I sold a gunshow pick-up to a forum member, without measure, and blade was too high.
One issue will be the length of the blade. In 1924, Savage switched to a longer integral blade base. You will see "post" or "pre" 260,000 on the packaging, referring to the Savage 99 serial number. For a Model 20, the serial number change is at about 9,000. M20 and M99 shared front sight blades for certain models.
Don't lose or bugger that tiny screw/retaining pin!
A true-copper penny is also a popular substitute, if you are up to some saw, drill and file work. (Keep Able smilin' above the base, and don't cut while on the rifle!) You end up with a post-style sight. There are other substitutes already having a bead, such as a Springfield '03 sporting front sight, but you still have to cut and file on length, and the bead may end up being too high.
