My Dad gave me his late 40's vintage LC Smith 16Ga SxS Field Grade when his health was failing years ago. I've been hunting birds with it for 6 or 7 years and while still tight it shows some age. It has an oil finish on the wood that he did back in the 70's and it's getting really thin. The bluing has some wear on it as well.
I could probaby rub in some Tru Oil and get the wood looking decent again but I'm toying with the idea of completely restoring the gun. Are there any companies that specialize in restoring older doubles? Any idea what the cost would be?
Thanks, Bill

Mike Orlen is one of the best. You can E-Mail him for a catalog at Michael.orlen@Verizon.net or call him at 413 256 1630. He's located in Amherst MA iirc. Keith Kearcher in Colorado has a good reputation also - I think he has a web site. Whatever you do, don't take it to a local pump gun mechanic.

The gunsmith is Nick Tooth and hes as good as they get. Hes a former Gunsmith and Action Filer at Purdys and has worked on the finest and most expensive fine guns in the world. Hes one of 4 people certified to handle and work on the guns in the Royal collection.
With that resume, youd think his prices are too highthat is not the case. If you ask me, Nick doesnt charge what hes worth, but thats his business. If you call him, tell him I referred youI think hed appreciate that.
Best of luck on your restorationThat will be a world class done when Nicks done with it; probably the finest gun youve ever owned (pure speculation on my part, I have no idea whats in your collection)

Hey Kevin, thanks for the information. I had wondered where Nick had gone. He never did any work for me, but gave me some good advice when he was associated with the Bass Pro Shop Fine Gun Room.
An old dog don't run no trails, an old dog don't flush no quails, but he can still bury a bone.

http://turnbullrestoration.com/Not cheap, but work is second to none. Be warned that a full resoration on an LC is likely going to run you about three times the retail for that shotgun. It would be cheaper to find a mint one to buy and keep that one as is for nostalgia, but of course, money isn't the deciding factor in these things.

You might want to try Turnbull Restorations if you're looking for a true restoration vs.refinishing. http://www.turnbullrestoration.com
