Whittaker Guns is draining my shooting account this year. I checked my email around 11:00 MST and saw their announcement for Barrett Fieldcraft Rifles in stock today. I called and found the 21" 6.5 Creedmoor was out of stock so I ordered an 18" with threaded barrel as well as some Hornady 140 ELD match, 143 ELD Precision Hunter, and 147 ELD Match ammunition. This should be an accurate, compact rifle for coyotes, antelope, mule deer and Elk for 250/300 yards here in Colorado. The threaded barrel may give me an excuse to get another suppressor too.

The Barrett will be a lot easier to carry than my current 30-06 and 308 rifles that weigh around 8.5# scoped. Recoil will definitely be lighter for my 74 year old shoulder. I'm looking forward to working with my new toy!

I will happily accept any recommendations for loads or ammo not mentioned in the Barrett Fieldcraft thread or elsewhere on the site?

I picked the same rifle up today... a lightweight host for my suppressor.

If You are considering one it is a good time to buy one... as Whittakers has the best price I have seen, Plus the 5% off for their moving sale which ends this Saturday.

Jerry,
What suppressor are you using? I was thinking of getting a 30 caliber and threading several rifles for it.

Bruce,

I've got 2 SAS 'Reapers', They're 7 inches long and weigh approx. 15 ounces (Ti).

I went with the shorter length for hunting, but kind of wished I'd picked up one of the longer versions... the arbiter (9 ? inches), as it of course is quieter.

Got a very good price on the SAS cans, I had it narrowed down to them or thunder beast (now I'd also throw in Dead Air's can) for suppression and minimal weight. My decision on suppression was not based on actual performance that I saw, just internet comparisons===> which is not the best, side by side comparison trumps that, but there was no way here to do that with the cans I was interested in..

I did just that. I'm still waiting for the suppressor since September. I ordered one because the guy took his .300 Blackout outside with a 5" can on it to demostrate. He fired some factory ammo. I have no idea if it was sub-sonic or not. But with the can it was noticably quieter than the shot without the can. Being a good American, if a little is good a lot is better so I ordered a Thunder Beast 9. It will go on my 6.5 Creedmoor.

Jerry and Ringman,
Thanks for the feedback. It will be several months before I start looking for a suppressor. I plan to use it on 308 Winchester and 30-06 as well as the 6.5 Creedmore.

Didn't realize they were threaded!

Might have to sell a Kimber & couple of Glocks and get one.

It is an option. Shorter (18" on sa) is threaded while longer (21" on sa) is not. Nice nod to the customer; something kimber might have considered.

Tennessee,
That is good shooting by jac3k! I hope this old guy can do as well at 200. I have 100 rounds of the ELD-X to play with. I saw your comments on the Barrett 18" 6.5 Creedmoor and that is what helped me decide to buy the rifle.

rockdoc,
Unfortunately UPS hasn't moved my rifle from Hodgkins, IL since May 7 so I can't give you an exact weight. Several comments on Barrett threads show it as very close to 5# for the bare rifle.

rockdoc,

I got a new FieldCraft in a couple weeks ago, the model with the 21" unthreaded barrel. It weighed 5 pounds 4 ounces bare.
