Gentlemen,
Bought an Anschutz 1717 D Classic recently primarily as a light varmint rifile(Read where my .223 AI is illegal or impractical). I do a fair bit of night calling for fox with the occasional coypus thrown in... Thinking about scoping the rifle with a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 A/O Matte Duplex in Talley Rimfire Rings... Thoughts?

I have an Anschutz 1517 with a Leupold 4-12X40 AO fine duplex.
I love the setup, I can only imagine that the VXIII with Talley's will be even better!

Gentlemen,
It is done. Thank you for your input. Looking forward to next winter to blood this rifle properly on a Fox or two. Have a farm in mind that has plenty of brush and has not been called for the last few years...

I'd go lower with the scope, maybe a 3-9 which is the biggest I've got on any rimfires. If I read you right, it's not like you're going to be shooting at PD's at 200 yards with this rig, you mention fox and coyotes, especially when calling you might be real glad for a smaller, lower magnification scope.

Stick,
PM inbound...

cra,
I listed fox and coypus, which is an over large rat, also known as a Nutria. Would not shoot a Coyote with the .17 HMR... Your point on scope magnification is fine, however, I've shot more than a few fox(on a single call) with the 4.5-14x40 A/0 and a 3.5-10x40 LR M1 in years past...

This one didn't have time to even hump up. Else-wise, it would of fell back in its hole.........

fwiw,
I could not concur more on the value of the .17 HMR. I was skeptical at first, however, it's becoming my favorite rimfire. As a matter of fact if may become my "sporting rimfire" for use on everything from squirrel to fox... Thinking strongly of selling the high end .22 LR sporter and replacing it with a 2013 BR as a plinker. I've grown weary of the .22 LR as a killing rifle...

Great fun but a recipe for disappointment on live game over 15 pounds. From my experience...fwiw & imho.

Regards, Matt.
