OK,I want to hear what rifle/cartridge you guys would want if you could design your own cartridge that would be factory loaded.
For lever guns, there is the 50 Alaskan and hot-rodded 45-70's, so I am set there. I only hunt big game and dont have much need for any cartridge under .338, in my opinion. So if I were to design a cartridge it would have to be a 458 Lott or a 404 Jefferys sharply necked (like an A-Square) down to .375. Yuo could shorten it some, but I dont care as it should fit since .458 is the same length as .338 Win.
I dont need anything that would surpass the 375 in performance by too much, but would like a 375 without having to get the Deluxe Rifle.

What do you think? Thanks!

I would like to see the .284 case (fat and short with a .473 bolt face), lengthened a smidge to boost standard .284 velocities by 150-200 fps with no belts or magnum bold faces. It would be on a long action as well. Kind of like what the ultras have done for magnums, but in a non magnum format. Make mine a .264, or .284 bullet diameter. Flinch

Seems like the .250 Savage AI would be deserving of commercial status, as it would make for an extremely pleasant, efficient and useful short action medium game rig, especially well suited to the younger/smaller shooter. I'd like one, too! Not exactly revolutionary, but since P.O. Ackley, what is? [img]images/icons/laugh.gif" border="0[/img]

Cazador, you attracted my attention with your 375 idea, as I work with big bore wildcats. You are describing the 375 Howell, a 404 case shortened to 2.5 inch case length, necked to 375, with a blown out shoulder. Longer version is the 375/404, or 375 Ultra, or Black Mesa, et al, which ever you desire to call it. Avoid sharpe shoulders (like the Ackley's) in a DGR, as you will have feeding problems in the heat of battle.

***Edited after further reading***
John (or anyone else who is a guru in this matter)-
I am also aware of a blown out 375 that was necked down to 338. Why not just keep it at 375?
I always wondered why some cartridges had such a taper in them, guess feeding problems are the reason. Does the problem only present itself in rapid loading? Would a Ventruli(sp) like a Weatherby shoulder be better?
After further research, I guess I wish that Ruger had the 375 Dakota in their standard rifles
I would like to hear about some of your ideas on big bore cartridges. I dont reload, but still find it interesting.
Thanks

I'd like a factory version of the 460 G&A, a full-length 404 Jeffrey case blown out to 0.458" that sends a 500 gr bullet 2400 fps from a short barrel. The short version fits in an '06 length action and does about 2200 from a short barrel. I think it's almost identical to a 450 Howell.
I'd also like to see a 35 caliber cartridge based on the 404 that will fit in a 308-length action. It should just outrun the 35 Whelen. Okie John.

30-06, 270 case shortened just enough to allow a 6.5 bullet to be seated out to a depth where it uses none of the case capacity up. Improve the case, make the neck 1.5 calibers long and a 40 degree shoulder.Make it work in a standard length action and go shoot some tite groups with 140 grain bullets out of a 26" barrel with 1:9 twist.
Just a notion.
Bullwnkl.

This is the rifle I made, and the two wildcats I designed... the 300 suluuq Hyper Intensive Tankbuster, and the 375 Suluuq Hyper Intensive Trailblazer, or as I like to call them the 300 and 375 [bleep]'s.
The rifle is a duel-chambered Savage, both in 375 and 300, using a barrel liner for the 300, which is set underneath the barrel ala muzzle loaders when not used. The Savage barrel nut is used to shorten the chamber for the 300 chamber, by tightening it further. Now, I finally made the Savage nut worth something! Grant me the patent, please!
For the stock I used a piece of Douglas
Fir #2 or better. The warp was used a proper cast-on. For you lefties, you can flip said 2x4 and have cast-off if you like.
A fine shooter, if you ask me. I do duck hunting with it, as the groups it shoots dictate such. Imagine, the only Partition shooting shotgun in the world! Grant me the patent, please!
BTW I also wrote a book, when I'm not designing [bleep]. Its called the Suluuq's Highly Interesting Thoughts. I talk [bleep] like no other, whenever I'm not playing with [bleep]. ~~~Suluuq
