I have a little control over those things. Being on the water 7 days a week gives you a little more respect for Mother Nature.

Dayom, Pat, why not just come out and say lightening may have been the cause of death?

Her mom said this morning that the girl took a bath every day, and she would stay in the bathtub for at least 2 hours. Maybe 2 1/2 hours.

I bet a GFI would have protected her.

35 years back, friends of mine, young couple, out on the Texas coastal flats, small boat with an outboard, Storm coming in, they're heading in, outboard quits, he's attending to it. She's facing forwards, lightning strikes, she turns around and he's gone. No one around, she gets his burned carcass back in the boat and tries to bring him back with CPR. Not a happy day.

Ground fault interrupters are good things, I should make sure all our outlets near any water are GFI. If wired correctly, any "downstream", outlets are protected as well.

I'm wondering where lightning entered this story? There was no mention of it in the news reports here, just the bathtub and cell phone?

Reread Det Pats posts, mike. But, im thinking if it was lightening, being in the tub still could have had something to do with it.

Since an extension cord was involved, I'm betting she put the charger on the side of the tub - and got killed.

grasping anything plugged into a 120 or 220 outlet while sitting in a tub of water is a good way to get jump started

No GFCI was my first thought also. Any outlet near a bathroom or outside is supposed to be on a GFCI circuit, isn't it? Of course, if it was an older house there probably wasn't one.

Anybody ever heard of something called Root Cause Analysis? This is the cause. Everything afterwards does not matter.

How does a kid that age not know that water and electric can kill you ?

Exactly. Shouldn't be any different than taking a bath with a toaster.

Police have released the last text a 14-year-old girl from Lubbock sent before being electrocuted in a bathtub. Authorities believe she died shortly after sending the text to a friend.

A report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Lovington Police Department looking into the tragic accident said Madison Coe's phone was never submerged in water, but rather, touched a frayed extension cord she used to plug in her device.

I got hit with a lot more than 5 volts when I picked up my phone a couple nights ago. I eventually figured out that the receptacle I was plugged into was at issue. No frayed cords nor water involved. Path was: Receptacle ->3 prong cord -> Laptop power supply -> Laptop -> USB charger cable -> iPhone.

Not only the phone got me, but a bit later the laptop did too. Definitely not pleasant, but I doubt it was the full 220V they run here. Thing is, while I wasn't in the bathroom, I had just been in the shower. Grabbing that phone while still damp might have been the last thing I ever did.
