The Idaho National Lab is an atomic research center located in the so. central Idaho desert. It's where they developed a good part of the atomic plants used in naval ships. They have 890 square miles of desert and most of it is open to hunting. There happens to be an open elk hunt going on Aug 21 and they also happen to be in the direct path of the eclipse. They're concerned about stray bullets flying around with lots of people out there so they've decided to close the entire INL property to hunting for 1 day. Most of the hunting takes place on or near private land outside the INL but I think it's a good safety precaution. Nobody knows how many people will be running around out there. It's a long season and shutting down for 1 day won't hurt anyone.
The Craters of the Moon Nat. Monument is also in the totality path. Lava fields have nothing to do with an eclipse other than the name but they still expect lots of people. I would expect it to get more people than the INL. They're only a few miles apart. There are hundreds of miles of desert roads in the totality path so its easy to just drive out on one and have a cool seat in the shade of a sagebrush. That's exactly what we'll do. We're only about 70 miles outside the totality path and I'll never live to see another one.

Nobody is going to get hit with a stray bullet. That's a straw argument.

My house is in the path of totality. I just don't get it. I will be at work at the time, and will be outside operating a forklift. So yeah, I will probably have to run the headlights for five minutes at 11:30 AM. But I will not be carrying dark lenses, and I will not be looking up.
I know these things were a big deal before we all knew the mechanics of the solar system. It is scary when you think a monster is eating your sole source of heat and light. But damn, today we all know it is just a shadow, and it will pass in a minute. Much ado about nothing.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.

Total solar eclipses are rare events. Although they occur somewhere on Earth every 18 months on average,[30] it is estimated that they recur at any given place only once every 360 to 410 years, I've seen a few partial eclipses. But a total eclipse, in my area that only happens once every 400 years is a pretty big deal. Wife and I have welding lenses and plan on driving a couple hours north on the 21st to be in a better position. And you won't need your headlights at 11:30 even with a total eclipse.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

I'm in the 98.6 path

Dead center of the path of totality here in SC. I plan on being in a deer stand when it happens.

Cookie and I will run to the path's centerline (about a 90-minute ride north) and make an attempt at some shots. Been under 2 totals in the past, but cloudy conditions obscured both. Need to finish up on the filters for her cameras.

I have seen one near total eclipse, and would not go very far to see another. I would look up, if it was right over me. I looked at the one through a transit using a solar filter. miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

Totality is about 20 minutes south of us. Any of the cities or parks are supposed to be zoos. So we'll find a wide spot on a rural road a watch it from there. Or maybe a winery...

Hunting is best and easiest with a good light when it's dark!! And you can use low velocity, small caliber ,quiet stuff. Minimizes the risk of "dangerous" stray rounds. memtb
