A new pastor, his wife, and three young children moved into the village near me a couple years ago. My wife and I have gotten to know them over time and they are good people. They've been slowly getting established there for life in the bush. Funds are tight and they are doing well with what little they have. I've been able to help out with some motor maladies they've had with the old outboard they picked up and got him squared away with some reloading components and developed a load for his rifle so he could get some shooting in and get a moose to feed his family. However, his rifle is where I need some help. I do a fair amount of shooting with 338's and 30-06's. Usually in the neighborhood of about 700-1,000 rounds a year so I'm not terribly recoil sensitive, but his 270 win beat us like we owed it money during load development. I don't think I've ever fired a rifle so unpleasant. It was just brutal. It's a winchester ranger model. Basically, a winchester version of a remington 700 adl. It has the birch stock with plastic butt plate and trigger guard without the floorplate. I've considered installing a limbsaver or decelerator pad on it, since I don't have an old tupperware stock laying around. I was wondering if anyone has an old factory takeoff stock with decent recoil pad sitting in the closet that will work with this rifle. I don't know if they made a blind magazine version with a plastic stock and reasonable recoil pad, but if not, I'd need the bottom metal as well. It would need two piece bottom metal. He doesn't know I'm doing this, but I thought i'd be a nice surprise for him. If anyone has some old parts laying around that they have no use for or wouldn't mind donating to the cause it wold be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the bump.
I've considered that as well. Might go that route if I can't find a stock. Thanks

Well, I have a poly 70 Long action stock laying around at home. Mine is for a floor plate and just has a flip-flip pad. I could install a pad on his wood stock. Let me know if either would help. I'll be home in a couple few weeks and can get it done then.

I've got a late 80's Ram-line stock for a LA M70 that takes 2pc bottom metal. It's painted with Rust-Oleum Autumn Brown Multi-Textured paint and has a red Winchester recoil pad on it. But the LOP has been shortened to 12.5". Can't help with the bottom metal but your welcome to the stock. Looks like the 4th one down from the top. http://www.ramlinestocks.com/ramlinestocks.html#Winchester

ykrvak,
I have two .270's. One kicks like you're talking about. I installed a brake. Now it is a pussycat. If you want and can pay for the barrel threading I will donate a brake.

Light load some 130's
. I think I have bottom metal in Soldotna for that, it might be magnum length. Or that might be the bolt I have. Den 7 years since I looked at it.
. Dunno about trigger guard. Do you need that also? I'll be going down over Labor Day. Take me about 5 to find it. How about spring and follower? Which I think I have.

I shot an old Win 670 in 30-06 for maaany years. It was as brutal as you describe. A Pachmeyer Decelerator tamed it right down. Perhaps not pleasant, but at least shootable even with 190 gr Hornadys at 2800 fps.

Thank you again for all the responses and generous offers. I'll certainly consider all of them. The load we settled for is two grains below book max with 150 partitions so it's not a hot load at all. It's just stocked very poorly.
atvalaska, I know Doug quite well and will give him a call or shoot him an email if I end up going that route. Thanks.

I have a couple of these slip on pads I picked up just to lengthen stocks on guns that sold cheap because the stocks were unprofessionally shortened. They do definitely mitigate some of the felt recoil.

I load down .270 Win. for my Dad's .270 (He's had neck fusion surgery) I used IMR 4895 at around 42 gr.
The 42 gr load should still be mild on the 150's and still move them around 2600 FPS
