Jack and I got some trail cameras put up on a few of our spots. We checked a couple ladder stands for safety, and pulled one down to move and tighten a few nuts and bolts on. It has been up in that spot for 3 years now. So, it was time to do some maintenance on it.
We shot some rifles for a few hours. Jack shot at 50 yards and 100. He's making good progress at 100 yards and his groups tightened up with each new target. That was with his .223 Ruger American. Next time out we'll shoot his 30-06 some more and get that dialed in...although it's really right on at 100. He just needs to shoot it more.
Later in the day we hit some 4-wheeler trials that were right through some new country I hadn't been on before. He did with his grandpa and sister a few weeks back, but it was the first time for me.
Pretty good weekend overall.

Glad you guys had a good weekend Tom. I wish I got out in the woods half as much as you guys do. You sure pay your dues to get your deer, buddy. Good luck this fall.

last weekend we had a nice get together at camp. Missy and her boyfriend came up, we had 2 tractors working on the problem areas of our road. Discing and blading, we improved things quite a bit.
Something clever here.

I mostly do that so the kids can get deer. It's been years since I shot one. I don't think I shot a deer for 4,5 years now. But that's OK. We do have a little scouting to do though. My buddy Justin and his son want to hunt deer. They are first time hunters. We are going to have an old style deer camp. We're going to be camping out and hunting a big section of MN State land. Jack is going to be pheasant hunting during the MN opener. So, I wasn't going to hunt MN this season. I was going to bow and rifle hunt in WI. When Justin asked me if I'd take them hunting... I couldn't say no. I've coached his son in baseball and football. He is the most polite kid I've ever met. He's very excited to get into the woods.

I sit at my desk on this cool, sunny, late summer morning listening to the geese fly by outside and think....You'll be dead by 7am tomorrow morning.

Been on a snipe hunt when i was a young lad. With Grandpa and Dad. They got me good. But as the tradition goes i was able to get my cousin when he was young. Also my daughter par taked in such event. And now it will be my sons turn this fall to take on the mighty Snipe. The tradition continues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We don't goof around at deer camp. It's pretty serious stuff. Strictly hunting for us.

Red flashlight scares them away... And a whistle makes Snipe angry and they will charge at you.. Can get ugly. Don't use whistles Tzone. Not good.

It's the time to teach kids the way of the wild. Hear the crows and ravens on a cool November afternoon. Light a fire in the dark with with wet wood, learn to become men, even if they're women. Learning how life really works, driving for the first time, carrying my rifle and backpack, fetching my boots, making sure the deer stand cooler always has beer. Gifting them their fire butt-out tool. Sooooo many things to learn that it can't be anything BUT serious!!
