I sorta did this. While I have a lightweight 284, a custom 223AI, a 204, and an AR, I consolidated some others into Blaser R8 with scoped barrels in 243, 30/06, and 375 but this with NA hunting in view.

By no means am I a traveling hunter but I have assembled the following battery that will cover anything I want to hunt:

17hmr - little critters
375 h&h - everything bigger than little critters
.50 inline mz - critters in no rifle areas
28ga - flying critters

If I were to lose the shotty and add two rifles to answer op's question:

223 or 22-250

Of those you listed:
6mm Remington
300 Win Mag
458 Win Mag

I would have added a fourth, that being a 280 Remington and then the 300 Win mag would have been a 338 Win Mag

I prefer classic.

Well, we are only allowed 6 hunting rifles. More if you have a very good reason to do so..

I have
22lr : CZ 453 Varmint
22lr : BRNO mod 1
30-06: BRNO ZG-47
30-06: BRNO ZG-47

The 30-06 are beeing scraped togheter as of now, with identical scopes, indentical stocks ( McMillan ), rings etc. A matched pair if you like. Should be able to hunt, 99,8% of the worlds animals with those two.

The next two, I am not sure about..

What cartridges would you have chambered.

Please provide your guidance and advice. I'm thinking of a few possible options:
Options:
220 Swift or 6mm Remington
270 Winchester or 7x64 Brenneke
300 Winchester Magnum or Weatherby
338 Win. Mag or 9.3x64 Brenneke
416 Ruger or 458 Win. Mag or 416 Rem Mag

Else, just tell me straight up that I really don't need so much overlap in my primary hunting battery and that should go forth and spend money on hunting and only need 3 custom rifles? Something like a 220 Swift, a 300 Win Mag and a 416 Ruger...I humbly seek your advice.

I saw this posted elsewhere and I am curious as to what all of you think would make your idela dream hunting battery?

That list is pretty fn stupid to not have the 308 and 30-06 in it. The grand ol 375 H&H would also be at the top of the list and that's not there either. WTF?? Just sayin..

And a 7x57 of course. Not sure why one needs 5 rifles either. Needs a big, big travel case.

It is hunting season! What's in your rifle battery this year?

From my gun safe

Ruger 10/22 with 2-7
223 tikka 3-9 CDS 60 gr partition
30/06 tikka 3.5-10 CDS 168 ttsx
9.3x62 Sauer 2.5-10 TBD

Not much I can't do with that

Edit... maybe I'll add my 44 mag carbine wearing 1.5-4.5 with 300 grain hand loads for up close and personal or the 270 for the longer shots.
Damn guns.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Looks like my family will run a 223, 243, 260, and 30-06, with one more undecided.

For the worldwide five, let's see:

I miss Bob. I took a break from the campfire for a long while after my father died, and when I came back, Bob had passed. Sad.

Battery this year...

223 Ruger
243 Remington
44 Mag Marlin
30-30's in 94 and Contender
357 Herrett in Contender
444 Marlin
30-06 Remington

Four tags to fill. Hope I need to buy another freezer in November.

6.5 Creedmoor
264 Win mags
26 Nosler
7 Rem mags
300 Win mag

Season starts in two weeks, practicing with bow. I hope to kill Aoudad with it. We seem to be getting lots of those SOB's. When deer see them they haul ass. Pigs don't scare deer too bad if they don't get close.

Five years ago, when I first posted on this thread, these were my choices, though the first time I only listed the cartridges. This time I'll add the rifles:

.17 HMR CZ 452
.204 Ruger Remington 700 sporter
.30-06 NULA
9.3x62 CZ 550
.416 Rigby CZ 550 Magnum

These days I'm unlikely to go Cape buffalo hunting again, and if by some chance I did would take the 9.3x62. As a result the list would be:

.17 HMR CZ 452
.204 Ruger Remington 700 sporter
16x16/6.5x57R Sauer drilling
.30-06 NULA
9.3x62 CZ 550

The drilling works great as an all-around shotgun AND a general-use rifle for non-dangerous big game. The ballistics of the 6.5x57R are similar to the 6.5x55, .260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmoor, which I know are adequate for any non-dangerous big game up through elk--and the drilling's barrel even has the 1-8 rifling twist considered essential for any 6.5 cartridge these days.

Probably wouldn't use the 6.5x57R on a bull eland or Alaskan moose, but the likelihood of me hunting either again is also slim. I would happily use it on a Montana Shiras moose, if I ever draw a damn tag.
