I will be swapping out a factory Remington Trigger on a 700 Mountain Rifle for a new 2.5# Timney trigger. In the past, I've always opted for the standard trigger, but was considering the Calvin Elite for this rifle.

Are the Calvin Elite Triggers worth the extra $80 and do you think going to a 2# trigger is too light for a hunting rifle rather than using the 2.5# pull? (I do hunt in subfreezing temps, but rarely pull the trigger with a gloved finger)

I prefer the CE to the standard Timney, and all my triggers are set at 1.5 lbs, including my hunting rifles. I also hunt in sub-freezing temps, and like you my trigger finger is always bare when squeezing a trigger. I've not had any problems.

If you really want a great trigger for your 700, get a Jard Set Trigger. I put one on my 700 Mountain Rifle and I wish they made them for Mauser actions and New Haven Winchester actions.

I ordered mine with a 2.5lb unset and a 8oz set. Extremely crisp let-off either set or unset and no danger of it accidentally going off if the rifle is dropped or jarred.

I have a Timney on another rifle and thought it was great..right up 'til the minute I tried my Jard.

I like mine at 1.5. I don’t think it’s too light. Makes me a better shooter.

I prefer a 3 lb trigger pull on my bolt action hunting rifles. Anything lighter would be just for target shooting. I guess it depends on what you are used to.

I like Timneys at 2lb. Have not tried the Calvin Elite yet.

Is the set trigger a two or three lever system? This just might be worth a try.

Another option - although nothing wrong with a Timney is TriggerTech trigger. I just got my first one installed on a newly built 700 7MM-08 and so far its a really nice trigger. I think the standard TriggerTech is about the same cost as the Timney, they also have a Special and a new one just out thats a bit spendy. But the regular one sure has a great feel to it.

I too think it's worth it. I started shooting the CE single stage and fell in love with it. I've been shooting PRS and NRL matches for nearly 9 yrs and am now in love with the CE 2-stage triggers. In time, i'll switch over many of my rifles to the 2-stage. I'm the odd duck and set them 8 oz/8 oz. I realize many feel that's incredibly light but the 1st stage give me LOTS of heads up, i've i've got my finger on the trigger and it's being pulled. It then hits the wall and I know i've only got to put a tiny bit more pressure on the trigger for it to break.

I adjusted the pull down to zero on the Calvin trigger, cycled the bolt repeatedly hard and fast. Firing pin stayed set till I pulled the trigger. Its not touchy like the Jewel on one of my rifles.

My most recent is a TriggerTech 700 Special. It's fantastic. That said. I'm going to try a BnA TacSport next.

I've had a couple of Trigger Tech standards, a couple of specials, owned and played with a couple of CE's, etc. I'd say the TT Special is slightly better than the CE, but the CE may be slightly more robust. The standard TT is very good for the pull weight it's designed for. About the same as Shilen, and better than the standard Timney, IME.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the info.

Looks like it will be a little longer before that trigger is swapped-out.
