Took the wonderful 100+ year old Savage 99 to the range today and tested the three different kinds of .22 Hi Power ammo I had on hand:

Sellier & Bellot 70 gr soft point = 2622 fps

Imperial (Canadian) 70 gr soft point = 2705 fps

Norma 71 gr soft point = 2561 fps

It sure is a nice shooting little rifle. I thoroughly enjoy shooting this nice old Savage. It will never win any rifle accuracy awards, but it handles great and shoots softly. Very nice old rifle. Glad it's in my hands.



I'll get around to running some handloads over the chronograph some other day.

That's great, thanks for doing that, and sharing! How did your targets compare?

I was only shooting at 20 yards, from standing. At that range, the groups all looked about the same.

Any accuracy difference in the ammo was overshadowed by me shooting offhand and not being particularly worried about accuracy - except avoiding shooting my chronograph!

I'll try some accuracy testing another day. Though I don't think the Imperial ammo is avail anymore, and I'm not sure the Norma ammo is imported anymore.

Also didn't get around to testing any handloads today. Some other time.

GuyM, love the photo.I'm a professional photographer (40 years now) and love this type of photography.

Tomorrow I'm taking my 1913 22 HP out for what I believe is the best round for which I've reloaded for with this caliber. (Crosses fingers, knocks on wood)

Thanks! It's too small to be legal for deer here in Washington, but that won't stop me from scaring coyotes with it!
