Looking for a new headlamp.

The switch on my six year old Black Diamond Icon is finally giving out.

It has worked well for me.

Is there another to consider?

Durability is very important. Needs to be water and dust proof.

The BD Icon uses 4 AA's, which has been nice. It can go a long time between battery changes.

Really would like to stick to more common batteries, AA, C, or even a D.

I have a Black Diamond H2O that's waterproof to 1m that I've had for a few years now with no complaints. A Princeton Tec that's served me well for almost as long and I also have a Petzel that I've been using for close up tasks like skinning furbearers. They all run on three AAAs . For cold weather I load them with lithiums.

I've been using the coast led headlamps costco carries for the past year or so.

AAA's 405 lumens adjustable beam. Seem to have decent battery life and do a decent job of seeing where I'm going when walking the dog at night.

It used to be you had to pay big bucks for a decent headlamp, not so much anymore.

Petzl or Princeton for every day use. I use a Lupine for winter mountaineering and such, but they are not cheap. Worth it, IMO.

I have been using Petzl and Princeton...happy with both. I recently purchased another Petzl for its light weight minimalist features. The model is called Zipka and it's on sale at REI for less than $20.

I've got several of those, a steal at $20 for two. Costco also has a more expensive model that includes green lights. I can't imagine why that would be useful, so I got this one. Nice and bright, very even light circle, three levels.

Do these have multiple brightness settings?

Look at all the AK guys chiming in, who would have thought? :-) My old worn out petzl goes through batteries like candy. Not fun when I work in a dark incubation room all winter long.

Princeton Tec Remix Pro Headlamp with Green LEDs is the one I have and I like it a lot. I searched all over for a good green LED headlamp, the green doesn't kill your night vision when walking in the dark. It also has a good white light but I use the green 95% of the time. It uses a CR2 battery but those are pretty common nowadays and it's the same one as my rangefinder so the battery in the other device can act as a spare for each other. One CR2 also is lighter than three AA's or AAA's.
