Why do (did) firearm manufacturers use letter codes for year of manufacture instead of just stamping the full year or the last two digits of the year? I can understand why military arms and ammo would be coded (which I'm sure didn't fool anyone very long), but don't understand the benefit to civilian arms makers other than having to stamp one less digit in a serial number.

Not being married to any particular political party sure makes it a lot easier to look at the world more objectively...

"other than having to stamp one less digit in a serial number."

You likely just answered your own question.

Except more than most have used two or more digits to stamp a date code.

An easily read date code is of no advantage to them. The two digit letter code gives them 676 combinations vs 100 for two numbers.

Letters allow you to capture changes within the same year. For example AS - could mean 1999 as could AT but AT could indicate a 1999 model with a safety upgrade incorporated. They could indicate a change without having to add another character.

Vladimir I. Lenin claimed, "One of the basic conditions for victory of socialism is the arming of the workers (Communists) and the disarming of the bourgeoisie (the middle class)."
