Much depend s on the contour of your barrel. I have a heavy 358 barrel on my savage cobble project. I cut it to 20" and it is the bet pointing gun in my cabinet.

If your handy in the wood shop, you can easily turn a halve stock 700 into a full length stock by adding to it’s length and fitting a muzzle cap from one of the custom parts shops ( think Brownell, here ).

257 those are great numbers. Very encouraging.
I've become a muzzle blast coward--got pretty bad tinnitus--so this thing is getting a can for sure. I think 18.5" is gonna be the winner, which will be around 23.5 with the suppressor.
I like the M7's but I have sort of had better luck feeding with the 700's. I am going to measure the feed rail with of the 7's vs 700's I have and see if there is any difference. Plus all the bottom metal and stock choices with the 700...

A word of caution here. We had some of these fail to expand at lower-end .358win velocities. At close range, too.

I’ve seen similar with the 200gr Hornady spire point and Speer 180s and 220s. Some 35 bullets just seem to require stuff harder than deer, no matter how fast you push them. I’ve never had any issue with any bullet not holding together at even hot (whelen-ish) 358 velocities. Plenty don’t expand very much at all, it seems. Accubonds, soft lead GCs, and Hawk .025/.035 jackets are what I lean towards now.

Only reason I got a .358 was to put something between the .308 and the .375. I already went 338 federal once and wasn't impressed.

If you're not looking for a light rifle that thumps on both ends you could do what I did and send JES a Vanguard or REM 700 to rebore. Sent my Vanguard 7mm-08 to him. $225 later I had a great shooting 358WIN. The M7 might require a replacement barrel for a lot more money. Would have to measure the barrel to be sure there is enough wall thickness. Call JES He will return your call. Also my favorite bullet for everything in the 358 is the Nosler 225gr partition. From SPS they affordable. That’s less $ than I thought it would cost, plus I’ve heard nothing but good words about JES.....thanks for the info. I have wanted a BLR in 358 for awhile but a vanguard S2 plus the JES work would end up costing about the same....tempting

FWIW, seems it was posited somewhere that the Howa/Vanguard SAs and mag boxes are a touch longer, allowing seating the heavies out longer, which would really up some load versatility in a 358....maybe some that knows will chime in. That was one reason I had considered that action.

I used a 24" barrel on my build just because that is what I am use to. I really like the balance of the longer barrel.

I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye all weather in .358 Win. The 22" barrel seems just about perfect to me. I have a hand loads with 225 grain NP's (for elk) and SGK's over a stiff load of Ramshot TAC. I'm probably going to stick with the Sierra Gamekings since I will not be hunting elk in the future. The SGK's are a bit more accurate in my rifle than the NP's. I've only taken one small buck with the NP's and they worked nicely, but I don't think a premium bullet is needed in this caliber. Of all my rifles, this is probably my favorite rifle and caliber. Just my $.02 worth anyway.

Teeder and Hh4whiskey: Interesting on the Gamekings: I'd heard they were pretty frangible so I'm surprised to hear they didn't open up? Got any sense of how fast they were moving?
The speer 180s and 220's are definitely hard bullets, that I knew from loading them for 35 Remington. How fast were the Hornady 200gr spire points going when they failed to open?
I've got some .025 225 Hawks for the Whelen that I could load for this as well. And buttloads of 200gr round nose sierras and hornadys.
