A friend informed me of a 99 Savage in a local shop. Went today expecting a 00EG or 99E. It's a 99 I believe is a Short Rifle. Pros, good bit of blue, receiver thinning but not grey. Cons: split in forend, appears to be wrong rear sight, swivels. Think I can get it for $400. What do you think? 65,000 serial range. If I could get it for $400 I'd have brought it home. The pic of the crack is a little blurry, but, some of the crack work guys here have done is fantastic, Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

I like SR's, every one I've had has been very accurate if the bore is good. It would be a fun project or range gun, not going to make much (if any) money when you flip it. But I like to have guns to shoot.

Bore condition? A lot of it's value will reside there since it has so many issues.
Looks like an honest gun that could tell a lot of stories if it could talk.
Truth be told, even if a collectible gun has tons of condition and is something that would make me weak in the knees, if the bore is crap I don't want it. Even if I never planned to shoot it I would see that rotten bore every time I looked at it. The bore is the heart of a rifle.

I will do a re evaluation on Tuesday if I can't get there today. I am pretty sure it is a Short Rifle, didn't seem long enough to be 26". To be honest, I was so shocked it wasn't a Post Mil F or an EG my brain shorted out when I was looking at it.

1906 manufacture date, Model 1899, should have either a 22" (short rifle) or 26" barrel. David

What is the correct rear site? How hard is something appropriate for a site for it to find?

The 1899 rifle and short rifle rear sight dovetail are located in the same place. The sight on a 65xxx serial range rifle would be a Rocky Mountain with a fish hook elevator. A good set...$100 range. Here is a ruff one on eBay (its been filed) https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Sa...9?hash=item4d63b66dbb:g:9zUAAOSwopRYjVueThere is also a seller offering a new production fish hook elevator for $8 and shipping...good price.

Went by and looked again 26" barrel , not Short Rifle. Crack in the forend has had a previous repair attempt. Looks like it can be improved and or stabilized. Bore is decent or better. Thoughts?

Is a short rifle also called a carbine?

One of the definitions of a carbine is a short rifle, but in the 99 Collector world we don't call short rifles carbines. It would be confusing.. not least because we use the abbreviations:
SR == Short Rifle SRC == Saddle Ring Carbine
And the carbines were catalogued as carbines, the short rifles as rifles.

While we are on the topic of short rifles I have a 32-40 short rifle, 22 inch, that is in need of a metal butt plate. Can anyone help?

Does the fact that it is a regular rifle vs Short Rifle make it worth less?

Does the fact that it is a regular rifle vs Short Rifle make it worth less? There were more 1899A/B/C 26" barrel "regular" rifles made than there were 1899A-SRs, so on a one to one comparison of two original configuration 1899As in equal condition, an 1899-SR would be more valuable to most collectors in most cases. At least I think that they would be more valuable. My Father happen to like the 1899A-SR configuration second only to the 1899CD configuration, so many of the pre-WW1 1899s in his collection are 1899-SRs, mostly in 30-30 and 303.

I own a short rifle in 38-55 that I actually took hunting deer with once, never got anything with it but one of the few I actually took into the bush.

i may have a butt plate but i don't have a short rifle here , i would need a length and width measurement and a serial no..
Calhone can you post a pic from the back to see if there is any serations or is it a smooth surface.. norm

If we are talking about a 65.000 serial numbered SR, it will be a smooth buttplate.
