Don,

A local dealer sold it to me at lower end of its market values with a 13% discount as I paid cash. He specializes in modern, post 64 weaponry. To him it was just an old gun preserved in dirt and lacquer. At that price I might been a fool not to buy it. wink

Today I'm gently rubbing the finish down with orange oil/beeswax and fine steel wool. Still smiling on the inside smile smile smile

This is a great old rifle, in pretty darn good (honest!) condition, in a hard-to-find chambering.

No excuses needed, it's a great acquisition! Add me to the envious list.

Trapper, I didn't see where anyone answered your question about the crescent butt and kick. I had a model 95 Winchester in 35 Win. I shot it with 250 grain bullets. The brass is a couple tho longer than a 30-40 Krag, no problem. My 1899B in 303, no problem. The trick is you don't put the points of the crescent in your shoulder. It rides at the top of your bicep. It's easier to show than explain, but when you get used to it it's very comfortable and feels natural, Joe.

Shouldering a crescent butt plate that way makes sense. When I have handled them in the past I always tucked them in like a shotgun. Doing that I thought they would be uncomfortable. Thanks for the clarification.

I shot a Winchester 1894 in 32-40 a couple of weeks ago. Was made in 1922, had a crescent butt. 26 inch round barrel. Very fun gun and no recoil in that caliber but all I could find was some cowboy action reloads with a 170 grain lead bullets. I don't think they were loaded too heavy. Also shot another 1894 in 38-55, cool factor through the roof!!!! Those were factory 255 grain soft points, no recoil either. Sorry if I hijacked a little but i rarely hear any conversations about those wonderful older calibers.

I passed on an 1899 SR in 38-55 a couple years ago. The high bid was $1700, who knows how high he would have gone. I had $3500 on me. That $3500 is long gone and I still cry about not getting that one. Who knows when me, the money, and another one cross paths again, Joe.
