Last month,I saw pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight 308 listed online (as a post-64) and noticed something different about it. It had the Griffin & Howe base mount, which is not that unusual by itself, but what got my attention was the front sight hood modification. The front sight hood looked like the unique "Lyman" type which is typically seen on G&H mounted ramp front sights. It also looked to have a standard recoil pad installed which is something G&H offers too. Seeing this, I took a chance and bought it, the base mount, recoil pad and hood install looks very well done and also find the rear sling swivel is "G&H NY" marked. I know this is hardly definitive proof and a call to G&H indicates they keep no records of rifles worked on except for their complete custom rifles. What are your thoughts?
Having owned a couple of G & H rifles, the work all appears to have been done in their workshop. I especially like the base how the screws and taper pins have been installed from the inside, it makes for a very neat looking job. It is a unique rifle for having the G & H additions and like you I would not have hesitated to buy it.
Nice rifle, definitely went through the G&H shop. A good indicator is the blind mounting of the base. I have a rifle I'm pretty sure went through their shop and there is currently another one on GB.
