I received $400 worth of gift certificates from the LGS (Jerry's in Ambrose, GA) as Christmas presents ( everybody in my family knows that's what I want, so that's about all I get). I also received a pre-64 Model 70 standard as a gift from a friend (no sacrifice on his part. He knows he can still use the rifle any time he comes up from Florida to hunt on my property). The gun came with an old Redfield scope, which I intend to replace. I' m leaning towards a Leupold VX 3i 3.5 to 10 by 40, which I' ll mount in Talley lightweights after I ship the scope to Leupold to install a heavy duplex reticle. Shots will be in clearings in the pine woods of south Georgia and will be 100 yards at the most. No need for turrets, dials, etc. Just a plain mount-and-shoot scope in fairly genteel conditions.

Suggestions for something other than the Leupold? It doesn't have to be $400 on the dot, but I' d like to keep the cost somewhere in that vicinity.

I'd say that leupold would be a great choice. Congrats on a classic rifle, enjoy!

You might also consider the Leupold 2.5-8X36 with Duplex especially if your Max. Range is 100 Yards . Pre 64s ( especially without the Monte Carlo ) have a fair amount of drop , and it's nice to have a Scope that mounts as low as possible for good cheek weld .

GA270: What a great gift from your great friend!
That 3.5x10 Leupold would be perfect for your uses and if you ever wanted to Hunt Mule Deer, Elk or Antelope out west it would do double duty (and do it extremely well!) for those creatures as well.
I have the standard Du-Plex reticles in my scopes (3x9 Leupold and 3.5x10 Leupod) on two of my pre-64 Model 70's (one in 270 Winchester and the other in 30/06) but they have both been retired now for many years.
I do still ocassionally Hunt with a customized pre-64 Model 70 I had re-barreled in 280 Remington.
Your pre-64 in 270 again will be a great gun - its strong, safe, great looking ,should be accurate, holds lots of bullets and they are handsome Rifles to boot.
Enjoy your new rig!

Congrats on your M70 and best of luck with your scope selection. If like most such rifles, yours will shoot into less than an inch at 100 yards. If not, you can float the barrel and slick up the trigger and all should be well.

My pre 64 M70 featherweight .308 has always had the same Leupold M8 4 power scope and is my go to general purpose rifle.
The comment on the high comb is valid , so be sure to get mounts that fit you and your rifle or you will be shooting without cheek weld or worse, taking a shot on the cheek bone every time you fire a round.

Have fun and good hunting.

You might try to find an old Lyman all american 6X (Perma Center, of course). That would be an absolute classic on an old M70

I have been through four different scopes on my pre-64 Featherweight since I bought it in 1961. My favorite is the one that it wears now: a 6X36 Leupold FX II in Buehler rings and two-piece bases.

I’m in the same boat. I have a P64 Fwt 270... been hawking EBay looking for an M8 4x or 6x. Both of them seem to be about right for such a rifle.

What a great gift. Congrats!

Shots 100 yards and under: leupold 3x, 4x or 6x. You could even make irons work at that distance. Especially if you are wanting period correct. Why do so few suggest them for period correct? However, todays scopes beat 30+ year old choices in every way. Period correct was good back then. Wonder why they don't use the same quality lenses and coatings on today's choices and would any buy them if they did?

Pre-64’s and reasonably sized gloss scope work good together IMHO. Me, Im a sucker for the M-8’s in DD’s

1.5x5 seems to be the red-head stepchild, but it will work well out to 100 and beyond and carry easy.

Leupold 4x matte will look just right, and work well too.

Shooting out to 100 yds you don't need a variable that cranks up to 10x. A Leupold 3X mounted really low would be perfect. It would also work if you got an occasional shot at 200 yds or further. The 3X that Leupold is selling out of the custom shop is an awesome scope. Talley super low rings would be ideal. A straight 4X would be next up.

Win 70 in .270 with a 4X Lyman. A 4X will work as well today as 70+ years ago.

Will the bolt clear the ocular in Talley extra lows? I know on my current one Talley lows would scrape the bolt handle against the ocular of a FXII 6x36, ended up with Mediums. Another I had wouldnt work with Leupold Low STD rings unless I used Burris bases which are a smidge taller than Leupolds.
