for hunting knives. Sole criterion, if I may, shall be edge retention. What say you? Are the two mentioned CPMS Steels a noteable step up from CPM154? I have in service a great little Mike E Miller Lite Hunter (CPM154) and am musing/looking for justifications for purchases of hunting knifes in the said other steels: http://www.mueller-messer-shop.de/e...h=/Shops/61906544/Products/OD-G10-or-110Mike, what can I say - at least the guy is a namessake of yours. Both 90v and 110v are a big step up from 154, edge retention-wise. This is considering the steel only, not design, grind, or edge geometry. But, they are more difficult to sharpen. 90 and 110 are going to be close, edge-wise and price wise, so I'd go with 110. Don't know if this has been posted here before, but this guy ranks steels: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads...-edge-retention-cutting-5-8-rope.793481/Whether you accept the validity of the tests is up to you, but I've tried a number of the steels on the list, and would agree with the rankings.

Thank you - both for the link and your assessment.
Looking forward to trying the new steel. Am somewhat intimidated sharpening them - but the maker offers sharpening for a reasonable rate.
So, first to see, when I will need it, send knife of then and in the meantime, get some diamondstones and learn to use them on cheaper knives?

110 will hold the longest edge, but hard as chit to sharpen if you let it get dull. strop it after use, if you use 110. 154 will do everything the ave. User needs, but if you just need to try the super steels 110 or M390 are your huckleberry.

My main hunting knife this year was a clip point I made in s90v at 61-62rc. Didn’t have to worry about it getting dull. Skinned and field dressed 3 deer with it, stropped it and put it away. I will say it’s far easier to get an edge on 154, scary sharp but doesn’t hold as long. But really like mtnman said the average user would be really happy with 154 and it makes an awesome knife, just us knife loonies thinking we better. Since I make my own, I’ll make whatever I fancy at the time.
Cheers!

We hunt as a club doing large scale deer drives. Successful days equate to a lot of cold beer and men in the barn breaking deer down. I think that is partly the reason I can justify what a custom knife costs.
