Thanks very much Darrik for at least trying to put the deal together for us. You have earned a lifelong customer. I agree! First place I look for a firearm is Whittakers. I had the pleasure last summer of making a special trip just to see the old store. I drove half a day as an excursion from a business trip. It was worth the drive, just to see all the goodies they have. I've turned a few friends and relatives onto the whittakers site, and this year with free shipping-- HOLY smokes, as a group we are buying more and more. The store visit cost me a bit as I bought them out of all of the 17 fireball umc bulk packs they had. I'd do it again given a chance to see the new place. I almost bought a few sweet rifles. I slowed my roll though due to the logistics of the trip. Since then I've just ordered them online. Tough to please a wild bunch of gun loonies. I'll keep hoping that 2019 SHOT show barrett announces a 6.5 prc. or elk caliber besides the '06 or swede.

6.5 being chosen is not shocking whatever your opinion is, because it's the fieldcrafts #1 seller by a margin.

A 7x57 with everything else as is. The Brown stock would be ok but can live without.

I can't imagine they'd add a 7x57 when they already have the 708

They chamber the 6.5x55 and 6.5 Creedmoor, so I don't see why a 7x57 wouldn't work as a long action complement to the 7mm-08.

I don't disagree with you I just don't see why they would. Seems a 280 or 280AI would sell better in a long action while 708 would sell better in a short. My wife shoots a 250AI so I understand having chamberings just because. I was just thinking about a factory rifle and having factory ammo to support it.

SAS already confirmed the specs are going to be:
6.5 Creedmoor 21", #2 contour barrel (same blank used on the LA 6.5x55) Green stock Black cerakote
It's just a matter of how much they cost and when they'll be available.

Scratching my head why they couldn’t see fit to go at least 22” with the barrel.

Bizarre to me they'll do a limited run in basically the same gun they already offer except a #2 rather than #1 barrel. No disrespect to SAS you do a awesome job and I hope you sell all of them before they arrive to the store.

The descriptions I see here are not was built as a sample. The biggest difference being the barrel. The barrel was a single point cut, hand-lapped Rock Creek 5R barrel at 20" with a similar contour to the standard 18" threaded barrel. Very different from the button rifled barrel that is used on standard Fieldcrafts. A detailed description with photography was created.
I am not sure on the status of the project.

I am not sure on the status of the project. Would that make the 20" Rock Creek barrel you speak of,a heavier profile barrel than the standard 21" barrel? What caliber was that Rock Creek barreled rifle?

Yes it is heavier than the 21" barrel.
6.5 Creedmoor of course! it is far and away the most purchased caliber in Fieldcraft. I understand there is a contrarian movement against the chambering because of its popularity, but it is in good company with other popular cartridges like 270, 30-06 and 308.

If I were in the BUSINESS of selling a particular rifle right now I’d certainly choose 6.5 Creedmoor. Next year, who knows, but for now it’s an easy decision.
Barrel length is tougher. I think the standard 21” feels pretty good. A little longer would be fine, or a little heavier. But I’d not want it much heavier as that would take it out of its niche as a lightweight rifle.

The exact barrel length and profile is such a debated topic it is impossible to please everyone. The mission of the current short-action Fieldcraft is to be extremely lightweight, simple and reliable while giving up nothing in precision. The 18" threaded barrel models share that mission while being compact enough to be used suppressed at all times.
